BBC Top Gear - Series 23 discussion thread

Wow Harris was very odd trying to jazz up his segment with jokes and gimmicks. Many cringes.

Matt was good on the Rolls segment, got a few smiles.

First episode of the new series I've turned off. I was enjoying it but this weeks episode was frankly terrible and insulting.
It's very 5th gear with the new internet presenter, and the challenge (Ok none of the old ones were believable) but with this guy I just felt like he was insulting my intelligence by badly trying to make me believe he was actually nearly late, or the fact that journey had taken 13hrs.

The stars, christ on a bike, get some people who like cars and are enthuiast etc. A smug faced chef and old comedian. Just WTF.

Matt, I like matt, but he is soooo wooden and frankly a bad presenter, he can't pull off British humour.
The only one I like is actually Eddie Jordan, cause he seems the most genuine. I liked last weeks train trip.

MLB is a much better narrator.

He is also very comfortable and should be the lead presenter.

OK guys. let's get off the now boring conversations on presenters... taking them out of the equation... is the show any good... or has it run its course now? i. e... imagine your favourite presenters were at the helm whether it's the original trio or a new bunch of your faves....

Is Top Gear good enough?

Imho... I think it is... needs some tweaks but you know what after the initial disappointment and change I'm thinking that This PROGRAM Is Still GOOD Enough. I've certainly watched them all which I originally wasn't going to do.

I'm gonna go balls out the barracks I do think that Top Gear can survive

Massively overplayed the 8 hour drive. It isn't exactly that difficult.

Didn't even tell us much about the car.

Everything else was pretty good this episode.

Didn't like the M2 feature there, needs to knock that **** on the head, hopefully it was just a test to see how people react.

Evans annoyed as usual

Jag bit felt weak, could have been more I feel.

RR part with MLB good, he's settling nicely imo.

Over all not good this week.

I don't think the BBC can afford to keep Chris Evans on.

If they do keep him on for another season it will be too late to salvage top gear.

He is a terrible host and I have not enjoyed any segment he has done in the studio or while filming car scenes.

In my opinion they should have tried something completely new instead of attempting to re-hash a format that worked for many reasons, not just production values and factual content. Plonking Chris Evans, Matt Leblanc and Sabine Schmitz into "Top Gear like" situations and watching them go through the motions trying to recapture the same feel doesn't do it for me. I find it forced and very rarely funny, which is a shame because most of them are clearly capable of being excellent in their own way. Reid is a good example- I thoroughly enjoyed the Tesla review because it was him being him. As soon as he was back in the studio being Clarkson'd by rest of the cast, I wanted to turn off.

It's like getting the cast of the IT Crowd to do the Monty Python parrot sketch verbatim. I love the IT Crowd cast and they might even make it amusing, but it wouldn't be Monty Python. They do their own thing far better.

The thing the BBC never got and clearly still doesn't get is that it was never about the fast cars, or other sequences, it was about the relationship between the presenters. They were obviously pals in a way that the current lot clearly aren't. And secondly for all the larking about they were real, motoring journalists rather than just presenters as the new lot are. Well, one presenter, one professional driver.. and an actor who's clearly missing half the punchlines in his scripts. This lot clearly don't have anything much to say other than "... lets get to the next crazy segment." They simply have nothing much to say about anything, CH is clearly a journalist and it shows, if you want to hear anything said about cars you have to listen to him, everything else is just empty headed fluff.

As for the newspaper reports it was obvious from the start MLB was never going to play second fiddle to Evans for long its clearly rankling with him, my money was on their being a punch up but it looks like one or the other will simply quit instead.

It must be awkward on set if there is that much of a rift between presenters. With the old three you could feel that on the challenges 2 of them had literally sat there for hours waiting for the 3rd to catch up, or all 3 have spent the entire night just having a laugh round a fire in the middle of nowhere. Can't see that being the case now!

MLB is settling into his role nicely. Much better than CE. Agree that this was CH's worst review, very poor compared to the first 2. Rory Reid is a bit meh.. Think a rework for presenters is needed for sure and the format to change to work for presenters that aren't friends. Not the format that worked for friends being presenters.

Very much enjoying the series thus far, although I do understand some of the complaints. For me, it's just some light entertainment on a Sunday night.
