BBC Top Gear - Series 23 discussion thread

The thing is - the previous 3 were all experienced motoring journalists. Harris has that background - Reid to a lesser extent.

Hammond wasn't as experienced as Clarkson or May when he started (he'd done general radio presenting and a segment on Men and Motors IIRC) but he gelled with the other two well and came to fit the role. His accident cemented him as a bit of a legend. You can't create that from nothing.

It gives them a degree of authority. Evans - despite his enthusiasm and car collection just doesn't have that.

I like MLB but I'd only really be disappointed if they start the next series without Harris or Reid.

What's wrong with Sabine?

Fine as a driver but I don't think she's a particularly good presenter. If this series had been just Evans, Sabine and Jordan I probably wouldn't have made it past the first episode.

Yeah I really did'nt enjoy his presenting style for this show. It just didnt work.
Maybe Ill start watching it again now.

How many episodes are in this series, was it already finished?

Just curious as if he has stepped down with immediate effect, what do they do with all his footage they have already shot? Just awkwardly continue to use it? I suppose they did it to a certain extent with the last Clarkson episode after he was sacked.

Happy he's gone as he was incredibly irritating and turned TG from something I NEVER missed, to really not giving a toss about. Kudos for realising it wasn't working though, or maybe it was the pressure of MLB threatening to leave.

I'm glad to see Evans go. He wasn't right for the show. Although he was less annoying that I thought he'd be.

They really should have shaken up the format more when they brought it back, it feels like Clarkson's Top Gear but with poor stand-ins. They need it to feel like something a bit new and different.

My void for car shows has been mostly replaced by Motor Trend channel on YT, they do cool car reviews as well as more technical stuff like building an engine or head to head challenges. Good production, likeable presenters, good variety of cars, interesting locations and plenty of subject matters, much more than Top Gear.

This one came out today

Yesterday's was the only full episode I've seen of the new series. Strangely, given that he was the one picking the team, Chris Evans seemed most like the odd one out. I liked the three 'reviews' by Rory, Monkey and Matt. Chris Evans seemed to be shouting the whole time, like he was trying the gee-up the audience and convince himself that it was all going better than it was.

Now Evans is out, I think they need to go further in distancing the show from the old format. It just seems too much like a Top Gear tribute act.

Still, I guess that's because I want it to be a car show rather than the light entertainment show the BBC (and I guess a large part of the audience) want.
