Oculus Rift

Just a few quick questions, anyone using the rift on an AMD R9 290? Is it good enough?

My system keeps failing the VR test, it says my CPU is too weak and my USB 3 ports aren't compatible.

MY CPU is a i5 2500K clocked at 4.4Ghz. And does it really need special USB 3 ports? Or is the hardware detector been overly fussy?

Hi folks.

So having never really been interested in VR i took a punt on a Samsung GearVR as part of a package with my new S7 Edge.

It is pretty cool and has piqued my interest in alternatives.

My one gripe is that even though my phone has a high res screen, the overall experience is a little blurry and graphically not great.

That said i cant deny that i have been enjoying it. So my thoughts have moved onto better alternatives.

I would like the immersion of VR but with pin sharp visuals. Does such a device exist?

No. You won't get pin sharp visuals yet. The OR and Vive are better than the S7/Gear, and they are immersive and usable (particularly as you have full tracking and not just rotation), but not pin sharp.

Certainly not pin sharp but doubling the pixel density on the Rift in the debug tool does help a fair bit. You will need a monster of a computer to run 'proper' VR games (e.g. Project cars) in highest detail with double pixel density though. My overclocked 980ti is brought to its knees in medium detail with double pixel density (~40-50fps instead of 90+ which is required)

I am running 2x 980ti and am new to VR. I bought the Oculus Rift and have been underwhelmed after just 2 weeks. Maybe I need to play around with the detail settings.

where can I find information on making the necessary changes, and do you thing I would struggle with high detail with double density?

BTW - My rig is an i7-6700k on a Z170A XPower Gaming Titanium with 32gb DDR4 and 2x 980ti.

Thanks for the replies guys. OK so pin sharp is not on the table, but just what is the quality actually like on the OR/Vive? Will it be so much better than the Gear VR to justify the huge extra cost? My current rig is an i7 4770k and an amd r9 290, samsung evo pro ssd and 16gb ram.

Looking at the OCUK guide i would need to invest in a fury or 980ti as a minimum + the cost of the VR kit. I don't really want to spend that kind of money if the visuals are still going to be blurry/low res.

try to get a demo, there are quite a few places doing Vive demos, if you google there might be one near you (or certainly near enough to be worth the trip before spending £700 on a headset)

the Vive, from a retailer, would get my vote anyway, as OR support is absolutely dire, the vive is more comfortable and has a bigger field of view

for the vast majority of things you'll be fine with the 290 as a stop gap... the one thing being, with a more beefy GPU you can turn on super sampling, which makes things clearer in game, so if you do get a headset it would certainly benefit from a GPU upgrade

no VR games currently support SLI
and yes if you google there are OR settings to enable Super Sampling which will improve things

I think you will struggle until sli vr drivers are released so it can render one eye per gpu.

Slayer. Im happy to demo my cv1 for 10 mins or whatever - leeds city center.

Imo its vastly superior to the dk2, a lot better made, lighter, better optics, better software/drivers. Its still gen 1 vr so its not going to be amazing with 8k visuals and run at 120fps. It will be a long time until hardware catches up to that level. I expect developers will have to code specifically for vr to work well (or much better)

It finally arrived!!

And..... meh, the instant I put it on I noticed the horrendous ghosting.

res is a nice improvement over the DK2, but I can't get the xbox controller to work with win 7 at all, the fov is less which is really disappointing too. All in all quite tempted to stick it on the bay straight away.

Fov can be improved by removing the foam insert.
My xbox 360 controller works on windows 7 x64. Just need to install the correct bluetooth controller drivers (i just used windows update then turned it back off)

Well after much debating I have finally pulled the trigger on a Rift. Delivery estimate is August and i'm pretty excited :D

I was leaning towards getting a vive instead as I think it is the better solution but i just don't have the space for room scale and i'm mainly interested in Elite so the rift was a no brainier in the end.

Never tried VR before so I can't wait!

Elite is great on the Rift, it improves the game no end. Planetry landings and driving around in the SRV is a stunning experience in VR.

I just tried the pixel density increase via the SDK and what an amazing difference its made for me. Particularly on Adrift and Red Bull Air Racing. I was able to play both much longer than normal without feeling sick.
Eve also seems much clearer, as I suffered with things appearing blurred without having the headset quite high on my head (if you follow).
There is some tweaking to do as it can become jerky with rapid movement of the head. I'm running on 980ti in Sli and working well.

Can anyone recommend how I can get Shadowplay to record fullscreen though atm all its doing is recording my desktop with just a small window in stereoscopic mode.

Well i guess they have sorted out the supply issues. Ordered my rift earlier today with an August estimated delivery. Literally just got an email saying its shipped with a UPS tracking number. Its arriving on Monday :O

I was not expecting a same day dispatch!

I just got the rift myself and despite not having the correct USB ports it seems to be working ok.

Just a few questions.

I have the R9 290 graphics card, is there anything I can do in the catalyst control panel to make the picture a bit better?

In the Oculus rift settings there is a section called Beta, what does that do? Install beta drivers?

When I finished the original setup it shows some quick VR demos, that were very good. The dinosaur one is awesome. Is it possible to look at these again? how do I do it? Ok, I found out how to view these, it's an app called dreamscape.

Is there anyway to browse folders when trying to watch movies? Or will it only see movies in your videos folder?

I guess nobody is reading this thread anymore :(

Just wondering is there much of a difference in image quality if I move from an r9 290 to a titan-x or a fury x or even a 1080?

Significant! Enabling supersampling in the oculus debug tool makes a huge difference in games in VR - suggest a 1080.
