84 Confirmed dead after another apparent terrorism attack in Nice, France,

Because I would imagine they'd never have managed to plough a truck through the fan zone for example on the final of the Euros in Paris.

Part of me wonders why now. Did they decide on it because security was relaxed compared to the Euros? Did they originally plan for it during the football?
I know it's not really to scale but people managed to get flares and other things into grounds anyway.

RIP to the victims and my heart and condolences go out to the family and friends and everyone else affected by this utterly disgusting act of evil beyond comprehension.

How anyone in their right mind can believe that they are going to Heaven after such utterly evil acts is beyond me. It's absolutely mind boggling.

As if God is going to say - "oh well done for mowing down around 100 innocent people and ending their lives, oh and children too - here, this way to Heaven."

It's absolutely beyond mental. Sick.

Such a tragedy. My thoughts are with all of those people touched by this mass murder.

Information seems sketchy but it would seem that the perpetrator was perhaps mentally unstable. I have read that he was possibly on medication for schizophrenia and has a history of violent outbursts.

Whatever the case, a very sad time for those involved, for France and for the world.

Whilst LFF is not a mod, her post was exactly right. Please post in the FCD. I'm not saying that your post wasn't a valid point - but that this isn't the place to discuss it :)

Why ?
its about this very thread. i'm not criticizing the deleted posts, well done on that part but surely let some discussion go on without it having to be just about condolences.

There's a post that I've quoted above from a UB that confirms that discussion can go on.

The issues we have seen here have primarily been people using this tragedy as a means to "score points" against groups of people that they have problems with. That is horribly crass and completely unacceptable.

It is understandable that speculation will occur after a horrible act such as this. Respect for the dead should not be lost, however.

I don't really want to get into further discussion about it here. Please post in FCD if there is anything you believe is problematic or you wish to get further clarification on.

Ok, I didn't realise the importance of this particular day.

I see why they'd pick this, but surely if they're going for numbers or shock value then the final of a european football championship held in the capital, featuring the home team and televised to millions would have been a prime target too. A part of me almost expected it but I was pleasantly surprised when nothing happened.

Sad times :(

Yeah it's a big one. We don't really have something to match it over here.
I know what you mean about going for raw numbers. I've often thought sports tournaments are the perfect target too. Also very pleasantly surprised. Not that this in any way is a worthy trade.

"Very pleasantly surprised" is how I feel the French intelligence/security services (they're not exactly known for their impeccable standards) were feeling after the football passed without obvious public incident. As I said before, that collective institutional first sigh of relief is as good a time as any.

Indeed. I woke up at 5:30 and remarked that the death toll of 18 was horrific....

That's a good point - had they let their guard down. It would seem so from the announcement that they were intending to lower the threat level.

Sorry for speaking

I already gave my condolences to the people :(

Guess I have nothing else to add to this thread
