What film did you watch last night?

Hardcore Henry

Have to say that I enjoyed the hell out of this.
No, the story isn't particularly deep and all that jazz, and there's no real exposition on what's going on in the world/future it takes place in, but I thought it executed it's concept brilliantly with some ingenious film making techniques.

Is it a one trick pony? Yes.
Did I tire of that one trick? No.
Will you? I dunno.
Did I need to know how or why the bad guy had those abilities? Maybe, but it's not important.
Did it make me chuckle a good few times? Certainly :D

You just need to accept that this is the situation that our 'hero' finds himself in and it is what it is.
He doesn't know WTF is going on, and neither should you, as you're watching from his POV after all.

Sharlto Copley was quality and everyone else did their job pretty well in this live action video game of a film.

So yeah, if you want to watch what's essentially a live action mashup of a dystopian future OTT FPS game crossed with a bit of Mirror's Edge and perhaps a little Deus Ex, then go for it if you don't suffer from some kind of motion sickness or something.

The BFG

Took my 7yo daughter. She was of the same mind as me, it was a little too long. 90 minutes would have felt better.

Saying that, it was still a very enjoyable movie. Mark Rylance was brilliant as The BFG and the young lass, Ruby Barnhill, playing Sophie was faultless in my opinion. The CGI of the giants was excellent but let down in a few of the mix between live and CGI scenes, but this really is nit picking!

Overall, an enjoyable kids movie, I'll give it a 7.5/10.

Lights Out (2016) 6/10

Went in with high expectations, and pretty much matched them until the closing sequence which was poor.

Very 'jumpy' and generally this is done well IMO. A few comedy moments (unintentional?) but any suspense and creepiness about the movie is ruined at the end.

Glengarry Glen Ross. I liked it. It felt quite fast paced for what could be quite a slow affair. Al Pacino was Al Pacino. Jack Lemmon was excellent.

The Signal

Surprisingly hadn't seen this before but v interesting thought provoking.

Some films take our thoughts where you want them to go/explore but just don't have the vehicle or means of transportation to get....there.

The Skin I Live In - 8/10

Spanish film with Antonio Banderas, without giving away too much, Banderas is a brilliant plastic surgeon who has been through grief and as such has very loose and twisted morals. Very much a horror/thriller with a realisation half way through that made the film and what we had seen before take on a much more disturbing tone :p

Really enjoyed it.

And forgot

All That Mayhem - 8/10

Recommended on here in last couple of pages, really well done and tragic and much more of a biography than specifically a skateboard documentary.

Star Trek Beyond 4/10

Good crew, terrible baddy, terrible plot, weak CGI at points.
They made a mess out of this.

Let Us Prey - Scottish based horror, promising start but fails. Pretty weird. The ending is just plain stupid and doesn't work. 3/10

Superman vs Batman - Absolutely no flow and so poorly edited. We have a bunch of clips here, let's roll a dice stitch them together. 4/10

25th Hour - I've seen this many times and I quite like it. The movie does a great job of playing out regret, guilt and wanting to turn back the hands of time. All of the characters offer something to the story. Great movie to show to potential young drug dealers. 8/10

Star Trek Beyond
Just a mess, a huge mess, for an original story the didn't half do nothing with it.
I just felt so miffed how useless the "weapon" was, the first movie you had the bad guy take out a whole damn planet.

The Dressmaker. It's a Western! In Australia! With sewing machines!

It's a revenge story. Kate Winslet returns to some back woods Australia town to make peace with her mum and to uncover the truth about why she was sent away as a child following the suspicious death of one of the town boys. Along the way she makes a lot of dresses, falls in love with Liam Hemsworth and encounters Hugo Weaving as a transvestite policeman. It's daft, it's funny, it's surprisingly dark at times. It's pretty good fun, though it stretches credulity somewhat. It looks good and some of the costumes - the dresses - are amazing. Kate Winslet does a great job and she looks gorgeous.

I'd recommend it. It's silly, but it's worth seeing if you're prepared to go with it.

Ant Man - 6.5/10
Typical marvel fayre, nothing new but passed a couple of hours.

Crimson Peak - 8/10
Gothic horror, very atmospheric setting although you can see the plot coming a mile away. :D

Batman: The Killing Joke

Found it a bit dull, not sure what all the fuss is about this story. I'm not a huge Batman fan but enjoy superhero movies and I've seen much better animated ones than this.

4/10

Edge of tomorrow.

Despite tom cruise, still a cracking film. 8/10.
Love the concept.

Watched 'A Few Good Men' last night for the first time (shameful I know). Excellent flick. A lot of courtroom dramas become a little incomprehensible towards the end but this snowballed really nicely. Last 20 minutes blew me away.

Genuinely don't get what people's problem is with Cruise. Can't remember seeing him give a performance that was anything less then stellar.
Most of the time it just seems to be the scientology thing, which has nothing to do with his acting ability or the person passing judgement on him :/
