Driver caught doing 154mph and only gets 56 day ban!

Isn't the fine means tested on ability to pay?

Also, I'm slightly surprised about how many people here claim to have never hit three figures. It's worryingly easy in anything moderately new thats 250bhp+
Accelerating down a slip road for example from 3rd to 6th and your past 70, 80, 90 in seconds and well on your way to 100+, especially considering that you can do 100+ in 4th gear with two to go if you really wring it out!

Obviously 154mph has meant keeping his foot in a little longer, but not a great deal more these days. While not condoning his actions it does make the punishment seem odd considering the modern ease these speeds can be reached.

Yeah, my moderately new 310bhp vehicle would probably struggle getting to 150mph tbh. It does weigh 2.5 tonnes though. That said it accelerates well so maybe.:p

And most peoples cars aren't 250bhp+:p

This is the strange thing.

Today's cars are actually stupidly heavy. (I know why)

Back in the day, even big cars such as XJ12's weighed only 1500-1700Kg

300HP in an 1970's Jag XJ12 Coupe would give you performance like the Space Shuttle!

(I Know, I have been there! :p :D )

You guys are lucky there are so few cops over there to actually catch you, they hide behind overpasses here... no one wants to see a State Trooper Charger with flashing lights behind them.

Overpasses, trees, signs, lampposts...

Part of me wonders if they are just drunk and need something to lean against when holding the gun.:p

Its actually very easy to do in Old cars too!:p

Back in the 80's (You know, when Policemen were not tax collectors and the attitude towards travelling quickly wasn't actually nuts)

I recall a time when I was doing a, perfectly normal L3 Motorway speed back then, of around 90 when a Police Jag came up behind me, Fast, with the blues and twos and everything.

"Obviously" this was not for my benefit (Really, unlike today, it really wouldn't have been!)

He was however in a real hurry. L2 was crowded.

I had three options.

#1 Slow down and try to merge with L2

#2 Keep going until i got to the gap I could see in L2 about half a mile ahead.

#3 (#3 :D ) Floor it and get to the gap as quickly as possible and then brake into it in order to allow the nice officer to make the most rapid progress.

Of course, it was the 80's, so I did #3! :D

Since I was driving a Jag V12 at the time, I peaked out at around 120-130 (That is as fast as I think I have ever driven) with the Police car in close pursuit.

As I pulled over into L2 and braked hard to allow them to pass, they gave me a nice wave as they went on their way.

I wouldn't do that today mind! :(
I would say up to the mid to late 90's we got away with stuff like that but nowadays there would be no chance of doing it and getting away with it.

I got pulled in the late 90's in a breathed on 3.0 capri for 140mph but managed to come away with a warning and no ticket. ( cop was more interested on what was under the bonnet :D )

I remember my dad telling me a story of how he got pulled going 100MPH+ in an old Fiesta MK2, the copper asked him if it was an XR2, but it wasn't it was a 1.1... :D

Apparently he got told to slow it down a bit...

In fact he told me lots of stories of shenanigans in his early days of driving... Didn't stop the lectures when I crashed mind... :p

Sounds like the "driving home from a pub, ending up in the hedge" stories my dad talks about occasionally. "But it was different in those days, it was quieter". No, people didn't care as much.:p

On a mates private road of course. Everyone has a mate with a private road right?

:D Me? Go more faster than the OP's figure? Why, no sir.

On a more serious note, I actually think the equivalent of an autobahn would be great.

However, the trouble with going taht much faster is, if something does happen, you are likely toast. Anything you hit is likely toast. You can take lives away.

I did and indicated 301kmh the other week. Not the fastest I've been but was in Germany and chasing an MC12 who called enough at around 280kmh. I'd have kept going but fritz decided to pull out of the traffic in front in an old Focus at around 120kmh so I had to shed my speed ....rapidly.

Autobahn style rules would never work over here. Most of the sections which are unrestricted autobahn are dead straight for miles and miles with very little in the way of bends/curves.

For the most part the M1 is nothing like it, let alone the M25.

That was main worry when I did my 206mph Autobahn run. Mine was very late at night (about 2am-ish) but it was only a dual lane and I was scared of going past someone at that speed as you've no idea what they may/may not do so as soon as I saw another vehicle I cancelled the high speed run and dropped back to 70mph like I was back home :D

I took me about a dozen runs to get to 200+ unimpeded.

A friend of mine may have done lots of top speed runs whist commuting on his 1000cc sports bike. Allegedly it is limited to 186mph, so he had to prove this.. it seems the bike did stop at an indicated 186mph, but that was only 178mph in reality according to his GPS.

Whilst that sounds omg, on a completely empty road with massive visibility, where is the real harm, and why would 178 be omg more than 100mph? Anything serious happens and its bye bye.. fwiw, He said it felt stable and safe, and never once remotely cam close to endangering anyone as he would slow appropriately when traffic was around, or coming up to junctions etc.

I think context is everything..

Thing is a lot of bikes are designed to do well in excess of 150+ and be perfectly stable and controllable.

.120/130 is like motorway cruising speed if its empty lol

I've done 176mph according to speedo on the authobahn :)

Felt like I could have got a few more out of the car too but I slowed with traffic in the distance.

I don't agree with that at all, most stretches of Autobahn are more like our dual carriageways rather than motorways.
