The next Labour leader thread

Roah, I really don't anyone begrudges you for looking out for your girl, rather the manner in which you went about it. One which leaves two grown men squaring off against each other in the middle of a packed railway carriage, while the respective partners strenuously avoid making eye-contact, and everyone else is hoping to God you'll all be off at the next stop...

This is why I drive to work... :D

It wasn't her seat. It was reserved by someone else. She should however have had a seat arranged for her but unfortunately her bloke was probably too busy trolling on her rather than giving a stuff about her welfare.

Cheers Xordium :) another blissfully ignorant post.

So your hard man act extends to resisting a police officer enforcing the railway bylaws? Good luck with that.

Good luck enforcing it is all I would say, he'd need it plod or not.

This threads determines why Corbyn and his team should have hired a minibus. They could all then have had a seat :D

They could have stopped for a pint and a pie halfway and no-one would know anything.

They can't afford a minibus. They need the money to refund exhibitors when there's no conference in four weeks time!

But clearly if you look what's said:

multiple "men" said:
that was not her seat! She should have asked someone else

I don't know how many times or at what font size or language I need to say it in but I didn't escalate this, the other passenger did when refusing a fair request and then became rude and obnoxious.

I've posted showing that passengers don't give up their seats as evidence it happens. I'm not even going to risk that as a contemplation.

I thank you Hambut for your civility in this post, it is appreciated.

They'd have run out of fuel by Watford Gap and blamed it on the evil oil companies, despite video evidence of Jezza driving through 5 petrol stations.

Many people, including me, feel you did the wrong thing.

His pregnant gf standing would undoubtedly be the wrong outcome, in terms of both health and safety and common decency.

So you can say he did the wrong thing, but keeping his gf seated was the right outcome, in my mind.

Frankly you can't assume that someone else would have given up their seats because everybody these days only thinks of themselves. Chances are she'd have had to stand.

As the replies in this thread ably demonstrate, as a society now we are much more concerned with "being in the right", "obeying the letter of the law", etc, than we are about such a trivial thing as a pregnant woman standing on a train.

Young bloke getting his reserved seat = more important than a pregnant woman having to stand.

Since when did pregnant women become incapable of standing? Fair enough if her waters are going to break imminently but I think some people need to get a grip.

A sincere and gracious thanks to you for putting it perfectly.

It gives me a real concern seeing how men here would treat their partners while pregnant. Amy pregnant woman's comfort would stump all self entitled ideas as demonstrated by several posters.

Good to see another gentleman knocking about who understands.

On a moving train, for potentially long periods of time? Do you not see a problem with that? Clearly not. But why not? I'm confused as to why some of you just don't have a problem with making a pregnant woman stand on a train?

I know health and safety is mocked by many, but that would be a legitimate concern, the sort of thing that an employer might get into trouble for. Heck, can you imagine any employer not providing a seat for a pregnant female employee to sit in?

Of course pregnant woman can stand on their own two feet, nobody is claiming otherwise. But on a moving train for potentially a long time, nope, that's just not sensible.

Well if you don't like it there is always that amazing ability or button called: Ignore. Use it

I vacated my seat but would not be prepared to have my heavily pregnant gf stand on a train. Evidently you would despite your assertions. Again you are failing to read where I said they became rude and unpleasant, that gets you nowhere with me. That passenger who was much like yourself - morally bankrupt - in kicking up a fuss and citing laws and police being called etc for occupying a reserved seat should have understood courtesy of saying after I informed them my partners heavily pregnant is she ok sitting there, the correct response is "yea sure no problem pal". But turn turn around and say words to the effect of "I don't care I've reserved it and paid for it out"
.. Well doing yourself no favours.

As it so happens a gentleman opposite my partner also chipped in backing me up. Had a few huffs and puffs and that was it.

Again you may tolerate a lot more than me, but when right is right is right... That's how it is.

What would have happened if for example the person who had reserved the seat was a disabled person, perhaps suffering from a heart condition. You wouldn't have known this simply from looking at them would you? Your GF is pregnant, the last time I checked this wasn't/isn't a disability.

At the end of the day you were in the wrong. Throughout this thread you exhibit this sense of being hard done to, having a sense of entitlement, wanting a new world order. I think you still have a lot of growing up to do, though I doubt you will thank me for pointing this out.

Neither is sitting for long periods - can lead to DVT especially in pregnancy etc. Moving around is good for the circulation.

If a pregnant woman was clearly struggling with standing then of course the correct thing would be to offer her a seat, just like you would anyone struggling to stand on their feet. There are vastly varying degrees of pregnancy though and my mates wife continued pole dance lessons well into her pregnancy. They're not disabled and incapable of functioning!

I think some certain few just like to portray a righteous valiant white Knight image of themselves on the internet. Whatever boosts their ego I guess. Pole dancer girl would probably have just laughed at the gesture on the train.

Chances are they'd have mentioned it in that case.

Let me put it this way, if the train had to stop suddenly, his gf fell and hurt herself and her unborn child... would you be quick to say, "Your fault, you should have reserved a seat. No sympathy from me."

Because I quite expect some here would at least be thinking that.

I'm the last person you'll find white-knighting, believe me. But from a health and safety point of view, you have to give the same special consideration to heavily pregnant people as you would to elderly or infirm people. That's just common sense.

I'm assuming his gf was heavily pregnant, as opposed to conception + 24 hours :p
