Retro console and games thread

I want to build an arcade console but I'm not sure which direction to go down.

I have a Neo Geo AES and as we all know, games are very expensive. The MVS carts are cheaper but it means either buying a convertor or an MVS and consolising it. It would seem that these option from a price POV end up about the same.

I've had a brief look at these all in one jobs - Pandora 3 for example and building a sort of consoled JAMMA system. A few threads on this subject have suggested it's not so worth the effort if you aren't putting it in a cabinet.

So, I'm now looking at a Raspberry Pi, fitting a JAMMA adaptor, and running MAME. This, to me seems the best route to take.

Has anyone done this or know of anyone that has?

A little while back someone made an arcade cabinet for there daughter and posted the results in the console section, have a look back a few pages it was damn impressive

Won an auction for some gamecube games today, paper mario, double dash, luigis mansion, sunshine, star fox adventures and super monkey ball! I already own sunshine so will move one on.

Ebay prices though, not sure kind of got ahead of myself. I want the games but wish i could be patient and find them in a cheap nice bundle or job lot! From now on i will hold out longer i think!

Have wanted to play paper mario for a long time mind and this is one that seems to hold its price

You have to be patient, otherwise you'll go broke.

I did a similar thing when I first started scratching the retro itch and spent a lot of money in a very short space of time. It wasn't until my wife totalled up a monthly spend once that I had to stop.

Now I spend more time looking for stuff on other sites, as well as eBay, just waiting for the right deals to come along. It took me six months to get my hands on the Hori stick I bought last week, because I just wasn't prepared to pay £100 or more.

Yea, i suppose we all learn on way or another! It wasnt mad and i dont buy a lot at the mo but i agree that it can be too easy to over spend! Especially when deals can be had! Ill calm it down from now on and take my time! No rush

Do you plan on connecting it to an LCD screen or a VGA monitor? If it's to an LCD screen then can't you mod a large USB arcade stick and maybe house the Raspberry Pi inside?

Well, I've cheated completely and found one ready made.

It's a bartop arcade stick setup running RetroPi inside. Has HDMI output.

Probably not in keeping with the collecting theme but it's a quick way to access the games for me.

It's not just about collecting, it's the games as well.

I think I'll be looking at Retro Pi soon, the Xbox running Coin Ops via RGB still didn't produce a satisfactory image quality,

I looked into it and maybe get a 4:3 LCD monitor with HDMI.

RGB from a PC, Raspberry Pi or Xbox is too much hassle.

You mean some are greedy and selling for how much THEY think the item is worth compared to how much it ACTUALLY is worth.

I see my local charity shops are getting like this too which is a shame.

its a shame many dont know actual worth.see it every day on ebay. i used to sell retro stuff on ebay for a living for many years.

so many people think most stuff is rare or worth 2 or 3 times as much when most stuff almost every house hold has it in the loft.

most consoles can still be had for under 20 quid. i used to get in trouble on here before cause id see in members market some people trying to sell mega drives or whatever for like £90 when you can get one every day even now for 10-15 quid.on ebay.

there is selling price then there is the price people will actually pay. the bad thing with ebay now and over recent years is the amount of shill bidding and scams is a joke.

you better off trying to get on boot sales classified local papers and the like and charity stores that havent cottoned on.

remember most sites selling gear will be adding atleast 50 percent on top of everything.

People are willing to pay a high price for the convenience of a buy it now listing. Good pictures, high feedback and quick estimated delivery all help too.

I listed a SNES (on it's own, no games, with 1 controller and leads) for £70+P&P last week and it sold within a couple hours. There were plenty others for £45-50 BIN and for even less as auction-style listings.

It's pretty cool. I'm not hugely clued up on RetroPi right now but was hoping it would have Amiga games on it. Think it's being worked on or something.

As for the thing itself, I think it's all readily available. The frame, buttons and innards are all available online or auction sites. I think the lad maybe made one or two and put them on the auction site to see what folk would pay for them. If it makes him a dollar then I guess he'd make more.

Could also put kodi on it.

Haven't had any luck lately on the retro hunt, any local shops now sell games at top end prices and charity shops don't seem to ever have electrical's nowadays. Getting lucky at a car boot seems to be the only way forward now which is a shame. Part of the enjoyment was the discovery of a bargain hidden away at the bottom of a box somewhere or offering to 'take the lot' for a good price.

I remember Gamestation, before Game swallowed them, used to sell 3 snes games for a tenner in a big box, had a rummage, Donkey Kong Country 1 2 and 3, thank you very much :)

Still, I'm enjoying playing through Mario World for the 100000th time with the missus at the moment though :)

I got Mario Kart: Double Dash the other day with a preowned sticker still attached - £1. And I've had lots of Mega Drive games with prices even less than that!

I wish someone would invent a time machine already :D

Pretty sure my retropie front end has an amiga section for games, could be wrong mind!
