What film did you watch last night?

Watched another film last night:

Ride Along 2: 7/10 - Much better than Skiptrace below. Has its funny moments but Kevin Hart's incessant and inane jabbering can get a bit annoying. I feel for Ice Cube ;)

Skiptrace: 6/10 - Essentially a copy of Rush Hour with Jackie Chan but Johnny Knoxville in place of Chris Tucker. Not as good but still worth a watch for the usual Jackie Chan stunts.

Captain America: First Avenger
6/10

Not bad, loved the style of the film and it had Natalie Dormer in it but a lot of the CGI was pretty bad and the film just didn't flow right for me, feels as though it was cut to shreds.

Room

Initially thought it was going to be some drab indie movie. Could not have been more wrong. I cried and cried and then cried some more. Intensely moving piece of cinema and easily Abrahamson's best movie. Incredibly well shot and acted. It never becomes the exploitation movie it could have so easily been mistaken for.

Drive

So this movie is still as good as when I first watched it. Goslings best performance and an excellent supporting cast with great abeit over done themes. But alas, for a movie about a stunt driver who drives bad dudes about on the side, there's a distinct lack of any notable chases... or any at all really. Still a great flick, but it misses out on being timeless because it basically just turns into Sunday night drama by the end.

Technically, yes.

Pretty much this. Any films that get 5 or less on imdb are instant skips for me. Even 6 is cutting it fine.

I hear what you and Von are saying, but films are subjective.
If I always went with what the majority of people thought, and avoided anything that rated at a certain certain level or below, then I'd have missed out on plenty of films that I ended up enjoying.

These days, there seems to be a mentality of it's total crap if it isn't absolutely awesome.

Agree with you here. I think it's a very similar mentality when it comes to games too and you could argue that's even more subjective.

This, We seem to live in a time where other people's opinions define our enjoyment of a book/movie/film. I have hated some movies that were rated highly, and found other highly rated movies meh. Sicario and To Kill a Mockingird are two examples. While on the other hand a film called Rebound with Martin Lawrence got bad ratings, but I really enjoyed it.

The book is much, much better than the film - I it before the film and was hugely disappointed by how it was adapted.

The TV Moive is far better and still worth a watch

Damn you, Toffnar :p

Totally agree.
It's also the age of actively trying to find fault, no matter how small, and then acting like that small fault makes the entire thing terrible.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I've been guilty of this plenty of times, but still.

Room 6/10

The first 20 minutes were boring and it didn't get much better from there

Worth a watch but I just felt it lacking

Careful, you'll get stoned to death in here saying that xD

Though I will admit the start is quite tedious, though necessary for setting up the themes/scenario.

Star Trek: Beyond

Ok, yeah, the storyline wasn't particularly awesome and the bad guy rivaled Nero for lame motivation.
Still, I enjoyed it well enough for what it was.

Visuals were mostly fantastic. That space station was basically the Citadel from Mass Effect.

I give it 6.5 Cochranes.

300: Rise of an Empire

Frankly, it was a load of rubbish, but it had Eva Green (who is a Goddess) in it and she got her knockers out.

The rest was pretty low rent stuff and made the original 300 look like a masterpiece by comparison.

5/10 (Eva Green gives it an extra point)

Two from the weekend for me, both probably past their best:-

Live and Let Die - this was my first Bond film as a kid and we had it on video so I was quoting along with it but it wasn't as good as I remembered it though. Best song and Bond girls though. 3/5

Wayne's World - another that wasn't as good as I remembered but some chuckles and Bohemian Rhapsody too. 3/5

Star Trek: Beyond

I normally quite like the recent Star Trek movies, this one however lacked depth, felt empty and very rushed. The bad guy also was very forgettable. 4/10

Legend of Tarzan

Felt like a wannabe sequal to The Jungle Book (funny that). I love Margot Robbie. Jackson was actually pretty entertaining. CGI was ropey as ****

6/10

Room

Well, that was way more intense than expected! Very emotional, very interesting, and I thought the pacing was fine, kinda played in to the distortion of time/reality.

7/10

Campaign

After watching Room, we wanted something more light-hearted, and found this on Prime. By the numbers rivalry comedy, but it did have some lol moments.

5/10

The scores on IMDB have always reflected my opinion on a movie (the comments not so much) and that's with almost 20 years of experience with the site. It isn't telling me what to watch, it's showing me appropriate scores for my tastes - I guess I'm just lucky to have an imdb-mainstream palette for movies.
