What games surpassed your expectations?

I originally tried Demon Souls on the PS3 and didn't really enjoy it ( got about an hour in). I impulsively bought Dark Souls for my PS3 thinking that maybe I was wrong. Didn't really like it on my first outing.

My brother gifted me Dark Souls on steam about a year later. I had no intention of playing it but tried it again to try and relieve my RPG itch. 150+ hours later I was hooked on a second playthrough.

The series now remains my favourite.

my souls series story is exactly the same as yours, tried several times and then one day, thanks to folks on here and a podcast i listen to, i was hooked. passed the point i kept stopping at and it all clicked. especially dark souls 1, so much to explore certainly my best rpg of all time. i struggle to return to it now just as its not aged amazingly well but its still an amazing world to explore

Salt and Sanctuary(had high hopes, but it exceeded them by far)

Edit- Also, the Skyrim Mod Enderal. Better than most games released nowadays.

Welcome back to the real world... recommendations... Doom? hmmm. Try Crysis 1,2 and 3 if you like your FPS, or Dark Souls 3 for the best RPG action(very difficult, scarily possibly!), Skyrim is a wonderful world to live in and relax, new updated version coming out soon. Best car game=Forza Horizon 3.

Tomb Raider, Doom, I wasn't sure they could live up to the memories of the originals but they did. Also singularity, it was recommended to me and I wasn't expecting much but it was a really good game.

Thanks for your advice. Also playing wolfein stein new order, must admit it ain't got my attention like the old one did at the start.
 
Sniper Elite 3. Bought it on a whim for £7 in Steam weekend sale. Thoroughly enjoyed it surprised me even though campaign lasted only 7hrs. So went and bought Season Pass for £9.99 off Bundlestars. Not bad when its now £39.99 for game and £24.99 for season pass!
