All police to have degrees!

Wrong on every level.

A degree is meaningless, I would sooner take someone who has worked in a forensic lab as a school leaver with 3 or 4 years under there belt than a school leaver who has been to uni studying the same subject.

The truth of the matter is a degree takes someone out of a unemployment statistic, or is that me being cynical :)

Pathetic on all levels.

That is you being cynical :)

Whilst i agree a degree doesn't make you this all-singing all-dancing superhero, it does show that you have the ability to learn academically at a high level. Hence why specialist jobs have them as requirements. You can't just take a school leaver who's worked in a shop for 3-4 years at the same value. And apart from apprenticeships, it's nigh on impossible for a school leaver (of this day and age) to land in a job of a relevant field.

I know my employer (one of the largest IT companies) wouldn't even consider a candidate without a degree of some form. But they won't just base their decision solely on the academic qualifications, they will of course expect to see work experience. The point i'm making is that in my field there is a huge pool of people with both the degree and experience, so it'll be very rare for them to choose someone with experience and no degree.

My girlfriends little sister is studying International Business at York, the work doesn't seem overly challenging to me; a lot of essay writing on business theory that expands on the basic concepts you learn at GCSE and A Level then referencing books. I'm just not sure how that makes anyone better at an actual job.

It doesn't make you better at your job it just gets you the job. There is no substitute for experience. I've landed jobs that required qualifications I didn't have souly because of my past experience in similar roles.

It's skills like that which directly make you better at much of the paper based police work. Being able to summarise investigations, relate what has happened to both statute and case law to build a strong file to pass to CPS is critical to more complex jobs. Add onto that, having to make it easily understandable to a variety of people and you see the value in degrees.

It's all about transferable skills.

I still remember when I explained drug laws to a police officer once, he was almost in tears when I helped him understand what the law was really for, and how it was simply impossible for it to work.

"and then everyone started clapping"

You cant be making new laws like the female ejaculation law

for someone who keeps going on about how well you know the law you seem blissfully unaware that there is no new law on female ejaculation, and its not illegal to watch.

all they've done is update the existing regulations for companies that publish pornography that online material must be approved/rated by the BBFC instead of just physical media.

as has been the case since before you were born.

To be fair, and I can't believe that I'm getting involved in this conversation, that particular... thing, was one of the items referenced as an example that could be banned and the BBFC ratings are in conjunction with plans to ban such material. So yes, it is on the cards that viewing of explicitly this will be illegal.

that's the extreme pornography bill, separate issue and doesn't include such things.

I'm sure those skills would no doubt help, but equally there are plenty of people with great English Language skills and no degree that are now excluded from joining the Police.

Oh sorry I missed that part, probably because I don't have a degree. I'll see myself out

I'm still not seeing any good reason why a non grad can't take the same training course as a 'graduate' from *any* degree. The idea that they all get some special skills not shared by non grads is a bit silly. Given the numbers of people with degrees these days I'd wager that there are plenty with mediocre degrees who'd still measure up poorly compared with a good a-level candidate. There are plenty of ways you can select people based on requiring certain skills, asking for any degree for a particular method of entry is rather a poor one.

A degree is more than just about an improved education within a specific area, they are largely about transferable skills, providing the degree holder with a higher standard of skill base.

Critical thinking, (et cetera...) too.

The Police force providing further education to their employee's is only a good thing in my mind, hopefully lead to a higher standard of Policing and more efficiency.

Do enjoy the anti intellectualism / anti degree sentiment that always crops up in threads relating to degrees.

Also; employers want the best applicants, that often means someone who holds a degree as a minimum because of the transferable skills that they learn while at University, which are to a higher standard. That is of course ignoring specialised degrees.

I'm just not sure what transferable skills you develop while sipping coffee in Starbucks and ****ging off Donald Trump on Reddit :p
