*** Nintendo Switch ***

I was just expecting full Tegra X1 performance, a significant step up from Wii U but not XB1 levels, but we aren't even getting that now

Course we will, it will be a step up from the Wii U. I wouldn't expect much though. But a step up from the Wii U thrown into that tiny device. WOW

Not sure what everyone was expecting of this thing tbh. Guess most just got caught up in the hype?

It all comes down to price at the end of the day. If they can get it out at a very competitive price it may do better than the Wii U. If not it won't have 3rd party support for long and will be as the Wii U was, the only place to play the latest Mario etc etc.

Yeah this sounds awesome to me. Only a few weeks till we find out more info.

Once I know pricing and launch date my Wii U is going. Promised the kids I would hang onto the Wii u a little longer so they can enjoy it until the Switch. Hopefully mario kart will be a launch game.

Sounds like you haven't heard the latest news. I was expecting a Tegra X1 and Tegra X1 performance, it seems like we are going to actually get a HEAVILY downclocked X1 so it won't perform anywhere near as good as it should and could.

I had read the news, I should have said it appears based on X1, not that clock speeds are similar, sorry.
My point was clock speeds don't tell us what manufacturing process is used, among other things, with it being a custom chip.

The post I quoted sort of implied it wasn't already based on an established mobile chip thats designed to run low power and be efficient.

To folks disappointed at the confirmed specs... told you so. Switch is a handheld first and foremost. They even say in this video where it was confirmed that there's 2 ways of looking at it: either the most powerful handheld console ever made, or another underpowered home console that might struggle to get traction with 3rd parties for multi-plat titles.

I for one... am honestly a tad disappointed. Not because a Pascal powered Switch would be fast or something like that, but because the actual process would have meant that the Switch SOC could have been smaller, less heat producing and most importantly, more power efficient. I.e. a Pascal powered Switch would have had longer battery life. Battery life is probably the most important thing on a portable console, so not going Pascal means we miss out on better battery life... that annoys me especially, since I don't like the battery life on current gen (PS4/XB1/WiiU gamepad) controllers. Not to mention the original release of the 3DS had terrible battery life. Chances of me buying a Switch day 1 have lowered.

So much bellyache over specs.

Newest Zelda looks great and has been shown running very nicely. I'm more concerned with battery life than raw performance.

The problem is a catch 22.

Gamers are driven by spec, always have, especially at the start of the console before it is released, people can only base it on spec.

Sales leads to user base. User base leads to 3rd party support. 3rd party support lead to games.

Games leads to more sale.

The Wii was a one off, it tapped into people who never buy video games thus never care about specs, like our parents. The switch is targeting both gamers, and the new mobile gamers. If the mobile games don't see any benefit in getting better looking games than they can on their iPad or Galaxy, why would they buy a Switch? If it doesn't look as good as a Xbox One that is now 3 years old and you can get one now for £200. Why pay more for something that runs slower on paper?

What you will probably end up with is the core Nintendo sale user base which is around 10 million mark. Which basically translate to Wii U part 2.

The only scenario where the Switch sells BIG yet with a low spec is all these casual gamers who likes to play on the move sees something in it that they can't get it from their iPhone or can't get it on their PS4.

1 Zelda game and a Mario game is never going to shift 50 million consoles.

As much as I am excited about getting my Switch I don't think it'll be a huge success.

Nintendo need to pull their finger out and make a console on par with the current generation offerings.

But do we really need a 3rd Call of Duty and Fifa games console?

The problem is developers would be less interested to develop for a platform that needs more work, being different architecture, drastically reduced power, and most of all, much smaller user base.

EA would be reluctant to make games for the Switch if they know there is no money to be made and other smaller developers will follow suit.

To be a 3rd FIFA or CoD console would signal to other developers that the Switch has the backing of the big 3rd party developers and the smaller developers who does more interesting games will follow suit.

Well I was hoping the Switch would replace my PS4 and I would have it as my second platform with my PC. As it stands it's just going to be a Nintendo device.

PC was always going to be my main device but if something like the new Mass Effect was to release on the Switch i'd consider buying it on that just so I could take it around with me.

when people talk about specs, they are not only talking graphics but power efficiency

pascal is more energy efficient than maxwell

Is it definitely confirmed to not be using Pascal? Originally reports said pascal now they say Maxwell.

Sick of hearing "specs don't matter" or "it's what Nintendo do"

If the BIG AAA 3rd party games don't/can't come to the Switch it will fail like the WiiU (I own one!)
Nintendo will support it but that's simply not enough for it to be a success and once again it will be down to purely crap specs compared to the other consoles.

But who cares right it's just quirky Nintendo so they get a free pass.....

The most exciting thing about Switch for me is the hybrid concept, which wouldn't really be possible if they were chasing multiplat game support.

I'd take all Nintendo console games being on 1 platform over having 3rd party games I can play elsewhere anyday.

Such a small device that has a screen and built in battery was never going to be an alternative to XBO/PS4, especially now we have PS4 pro and with Scorpio on the horizon.

1 Zelda game and a Mario game is never going to shift 50 million consoles.

Don't underestimate the power of Pokemon and Mario Kart :)

I don't think it's a case of them getting a free pass, more like Nintendo have acknowledged that they don't want to get involved in the console wars so what's the point in worrying about specs when they're clearly happy with what they're going to release in March.
