Suspected Child Porn?

It's not for you, or anyone else, to determine if a crime has been committed. It's not even the job of the Police to make that determination. That's what juries are for.

It is your responsibility to report anything you believe to be suspect to the police. It's then the police's job to collect any evidence there is relating to a potential crime and pass that evidence to the PFs office in Scotland or the CPS in England and Wales. It's the CPS/PF office job to determine if there is a reasonable likelihood that a crime has indeed been committed. They then present the evidence to a jury who makes the final decision on whether or not a crime has been committed.

You clearly believe it is suspect, or you wouldn't be asking for advice, so report it. What happens next is out of your hands.

No questions here, report...

It's not up to you to look through for evidence or to investigate the matter. If it's someones joke/prank, then it's bad taste regardless...

Money isn't important in things like this, if everyone turned a blind eye, god knows what people would get up to.

but what of those who find kids attractive but don't do anything about it?

That isn't illegal. If I recall this one guy watched CGI or comic drawings (child hentai) of children, rather than viewing real children, or doing it for real.

Those people don't wake up one day and think "I want to find kids attractive".

It's not a choice for them.

Whether or not they go out and ruin some poor kid's life...IS a choice.

We just recently found out that there is a physical cause for Schizophrenia.

It may be that there is a similar explanation for paedophilia.

Oh come now. Have you seen the stuff the government is going to be cracking down on?

Spanking, female ejaculation, period sex..... I don't know if you'd be in trouble to it being on your PC, but it's already illegal to host it in the UK

Not sure someone should end up on the sex offenders register for those.

Don't forget the proposed four finger rule, four or more fingers in any orifice is bad. Three is okay.

Seriously though, call the Police. If you suspect something illegal, it's your duty to report it to the Police so they can determine if any laws have been broken.

Shortcut pinned to the favourites bar in Chrome.

See, the problem is that all we have is an unknown link with a title. There's nothing illegal with that. It could in fact all be a joke or something completely harmless in the content.

I would've thought you'd need something more substantial than that for anything to be investigated.

It's like having a torrent file labelled "GoT S1E1". You assume this Torrent file will download or has downloaded Episode 1 of Game of Thrones, yet it could be anything.

Hindsight would say more information should've been gathered (just the URL would've sufficed). I would maybe mention it to the Police, but stipulate that it was just the name of a file, you know not of the content.

I would disagree that they shouldn't at least check the URL visually and whether it looks innocent or not.

If one single word got out about this and even if it turned out to be nothing that persons life is ruined forever.

It's not illegal to read a link.

If it's on the favourites bar why don't you just hover the mouse over it? It will show the web address.

Actually I'd say it's very-much down to the police and subsequently the CPS/COPFS to decide, because they'll determine the charges. Juries don't decide whether or not something was a crime, they decide if the person(s) accused are guilty or not guilty of the charges.

Fortunately, I've never had this but I decided years ago, even before i started looking at peoples PCs that if anyone should, then I'd report it , just cover my own ****. In fact as was part of the agreement i got them to sign..

I tend never to look at customer files or looking at the copy bar etc. After awhile you become immune to looking. The nearest I had was a vicar with porn who blamed his son.. haha

Basic rule, ignorance isn't an excuse.. If you SUSPECT, then REPORT but don't put yourself in position to find anything in the first place.

Seriously - I work in retail and deal with returned electronics that might end up being resold via ebay, etc. the guidelines are pretty simple do NOTHING, inform a member of management who also does nothing but contact the police liaison - regardless of how much it might look like a joke, etc.

We had one guy once who used to call up all the time who's background was a picture of him standing totally naked and featuring him is a tumescent state. Fortunately with our software, all backgrounds are disabled. He did it on purpose as he got some kind of weird thrill from us, which includes some young women, seeing his naughty bits. We found folders on his machine with titles such as "Castrated Negros" and other such nasties. We reported him. At first they disconnected his account but he phone up another branch and get setup again.

Couple of things for me though, if the man was looking at child porn and had links on his PC, why would he send it in for repair and how much kiddie porn can you actually get through chrome? I thought all that was the dark web.

The OP has already said more than once that he can't do that.
