Do I need 200mbs?

It's not nearly enough 25mb for streaming 4k content. I've got 1gb/s and I can attest that is enough but 100mb wasn't enough, having 4k tv and monitor and 16tb storage I'd wait minutes instead of hours on steam games over 60-70gb, and bluray movies 40gb+

100Mbps isn't fast enough for streaming 4k?

Are you talking about streaming high quality content from your local network? That I would understand. If you're talking about over the internet - which would be relevant to the conversation - surely it depends on the source from which you're streaming? Yes, I'm sure that streaming raw ultra-HD blu-ray quality requires much more than 25mbps, but the compressed streams from the likes of Netflix don't. Those numbers are actually somewhat inflated to allow a little leeway; Amazon only states a requirement of 15mbps!

WoW. Sorry, I've just been used to 1gbps download, 500mbps upload.
How are the best connections in UK now? I've seen somewhere around 300mb?

Once you get over 50Mbit you're more limited by the sites you visit and their server quality for response times and overall internet speed than anything to do with your connection speed IMO.

Browsing, streaming & gaming on my 200mbit service is no faster than it was on my old 50Mbit FTTC service with BT.

..downloading large files and Steam/Origin games though is a lot more pleasant, there's nothing on the gaming platforms that I can't download in less than 45mins.

Ended up cancelling, wouldn't give me 100mbs for less than £33 pm when there is an offer on their website for £27 pm for new customers

Annoying, not sure what to do now. In one months time I'll have no internet!

there is no loyalty. if you can't get there via retentions, just sign up as new customer in wife's/gf's name and use all the offers and cashback that is available.

Yeah thats what I'm going to do, why would I need to do it in another name though?

The deals that are available for new customer exclude existing customers such as yourself. Part of the signing up process will check to see if you're an existing or recent customer, and prevent it going further. Unless your intention is to live without Internet for a period (dependent on the length of their "existing customer" cooldown period) then the easiest option as I see it is for someone else that lives at the same premises to sign up to a "new customer" deal. I'm sure there are some companies that will not let you do this, and include the premises in their checks for previous customers as well as the name of the individual, but I know this has worked in the past so it's probably you best shot.

Isn't the 200MBps one the one without any traffic shaping and best ping times (from VM anyway)? It might suffer on the lower packages.

How do you get that? I'm on FTTP but they said they don't do any discounts on the higher FTTP products. Currently paying £22.50 for the 76MB service (signed up for 2 years, been with them for long anyway). 220MBps would be £40, and 330 would be £50. :(

Rang them up, it was after having no connection for 6 months after I moved into a new build...... The year is up around May/June so hopefully they will match it again.

Damnit, did you have to ring through to the special FTTP department? I remember ringing up and they kept saying I could only get ADSL2.

I'm locked in until Dec 2018 but will give it a try from time to time. I definitely wouldn't mind paying £30 for 300Mbps! The next step would be to CAT6 the house...

A half decent FTTC connection would be just fine, and most likely of better quality unless you're in a VM area not affected by peak time congestion.

I'm on about 46 with Zen, the only time I wish I had more speed is when I have a game update or something. And then I just need to be patient. Two of us in the house, both heavy users, never notice lag or slow down.

I recently dropped from 200mb to 100mb to save £20 pm
Can't say I've noticed any difference in performance or service.

That's good to know, been debating whether to reduce down to 100mbps as im paying 47 quid a month at the moment for 200 which is a bit of a joke.

I would threaten to leave but I don't have a phone line so the only service I have available is VM.

If it's just you and the misses using it than not really if your happy with games / patches taking a little longer to download.

Streaming Netflix in 4k requires around 25mbps so plenty of bandwidth spare for you.

How would I know if an FTTC connection to my house is any good, is there a way to tell?

The Exchange is few miles away but Plusnet have an offer on at the moment
