I think 'likes' should be anonymous, so genuinely good posts get credit, but you don't give rise to people liking other peoples post purely as some alliance forming exercise.

No, like Youtube you can upvote a comment and it merely carries a figure next to it.
If you start following the practice of other forums where your like count is recorded and displayed in public you'll get a load of contrived and reactionary posts purely to inflate this figure, and obviously a circle-jerk will exist where cliques of people will like eachothers posts to boost likes etc.
I don't think there should be a like button, but perhaps a helpful post button. This might make it easier to find solutions to problems in a long thread.
I don't think it would be wise. Mods are doing a good job of keeping things under control anyway without having more work to investigate.
Keep it professional, a nice basic skin like this one with a thanks button would be great. Also a desktop link to enable desktop mode for those who like to view forums that way.
I think these additions/changes should be considered must-haves:
- Profile linking to mumsnet accounts
- Hotdog stand the new default theme
- GD the default landing page
- Animated GIFs in signatures and avatars (no size limit of course)
- Likes, thanks, up and downvote options for all posts
- Ability to change username (with no limits)
- All embedded YouTube links auto play by default
- 100000000000000000 more emoticons
- Live chat window at the bottom of all forums, with audio chat enabled by default
- Ability to sticky your own threads
