'Band of Brothers' is just astonishing

Needed to add something to get above £20 for free delivery on Amazon, so added the steelcase bluray series:)

I did have it on dvd but that got borrowed by someone about 15 years ago, I just looked at when this was first aired on TV, 2001!!!, where does the time go:eek:

I guess the theatre of war made doing the pacific in the same style very difficult. Did many units stay together considering how brutal the island hoping was? BoB I liked every episode, the pacific a couple, hated the romantic elements in it.

Of course forgot about that. Just been reading the trivia again on the IMDB page.
Didnt know that Tom Hanks has two cameo's. One as a British Para after they have been rescued across the river and a French Soldier who shoots two German POW's.
Bluray version of this is probably one of the best picture qualities I've ever seen.

Hanks confirmed cameos are as a Para and you can also hear his voice shouting from across the river in this clip.

His scene in uniform here:

The French soldier vaguely resembles him but some say it is him and some say it isn't. Pic below.

If you like Band of Brothers then there is a very high chance you will enjoy the Jeremy Clarkeson documentary 'the greatest raid of all time' - check it out.

Band of Brothers is easily one of the most important, amazing and emotional pieces of TV I've ever watched. When I decide to watch it again it doesn't take me long to get through all 10 episodes!

I had high hopes for Pacific but, compared to BoB, it is quite a poor follow up. I watched it a year or so ago to see if I'd changed my mind but I was feeling the same that I just didn't care about the Pacific characters compared to BoB where every death hurts you watching it just as much as it hurts the characters themselves and their pals.

The US marines actively broke up classes at the end of training and spread the across the force so you don't get the trained together, fought together, died together stories on the same scale. The story of easy company wouldn't be considered believable if it was a work of fiction.

The Pacific really does get a bad rap, it's an astonishing look at a war that was fought against a totally different enemy to the atlantic campaign. Well worth rewatching.

The genius behind this show was that it is a masterclass in character development, focusing on a different character in each episode, all the while developing the core cast that we see in the final episode.

The Pacific failed due to not following the same recipe above - I just could not follow the flow of the story and the biggest deal to me was I wasn't invested in any of the characters.

I watched about half of the Pacific but haven't seen the end for that very reason. It just dissolved into a "oh look, another buzz cut American in a Foxhole/camp/somewhere - mostly in the dark. Then someone died and I have to work out if I'm supposed to know who they are. There was just not enough character connection to make me care or recognise who was on screen. Totally different with BoB.

I've not really seen it, SHAME ON ME !!!! But i think i need to sit the kids down and we watch it. Teach them what previous generations had to go thru.. That being said, what age do you think its appropriate for kids to handle such brutality.... I have one boy who's turning 12 end of this month.. The other is 10. guessing they're probably still too young.

I remember as a kid, watching Threads which was shown at school and all the kids left the classroom crying. Also remember watching Platoon (tho i was perhaps a little older on Platoon) Being born in 72.... I think Platoon was the first movie to show the 'horror's of war, as appose to war movies prior being heroic and showing honor and courage, more so than the true horrors of war !

In some ways, that was kinda the point.
BoB was all about the people, while The Pacific was more about the different experiences and what it was like. In many cases, it was quite numbing and it was down to wondering if you even knew who that poor dead guy was... It's not supposed to be a great story like BoB, but it is supposed to leave you feeling just a little of what those depicted felt.

I love BoB and I manage to finish it once I start watching. I wish I could say the same for The Pacific. Something about it just doesn't give me the urge to keep watching episode after episode like BoB does.

BoB is about heroes who overcame the adversity they were faced with - The Pacific is more about those poor souls who were nigh-on destroyed by it.

Which is probably why The Pacific isn't as well liked as BoB.

I've just watched BoB/Pacific back to back during a couple of sick days and, for me, the characters in Pacific are just not as well written as those in BoB for the most part. I mean there's BoB quality action throughout the Pacific but in the end I just didn't give a crap who lived/died so it felt like a "negative" show as opposed to BoB which felt "positive".

The Pacific did have my favourite character out of both programs though - The Marine "Gunny" who showers in the rain, barks like a dog and yells at an Officer on his pistol range (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu51rszgotI - swearing) who initially appears to be the "Ultimate Marine" but slowly cracks under the pressure leading to a few "if he can crack what chance do I have" moments from the rest of the cast.

Still fantastic series. Immersive, visceral and dramatic. For me it's all about Spiers and his light jog through enemy lines
