So, the interior was filthy. So bad, I couldn't be bothered to take a pic, never mind actually clean it. Spotted a dude on facebook, that my mechanic knows well, so thought I'd give him a try as he is mobile, and prices seemed decent. Happy with the results for sure. She scrubs up not to bad.

Fitted the new headunit yesterday too. Pretty slick with its BT, USB, Aux, and DAB. All wires nicely hidden away (almost). Only problem is that my mk4 Golf Cubby hole doesn't fit in the Passat. Boooooo.

Turns out I have a spare set of 18" tyres, so might even look for a cheap set of wheels for it.

I was thinking of putting 18's on it, but probably wont. It will soon need a couple front tyres, and I do have a spare set of 18" tyres, so thought I'd have a look.

I never said I'd put cheap coilovers on it. Although it had crossed my mind as it does need some suspension components most likely, and cheap coilovers are cheaper than standard shocks and springs. But I won't go that route. I'll do the rear shocks, and if it ever needs a spring, I'll likely do Eibach or H&R lowering springs then.

Looks like a nice upgrade from that F11. Will really look the part with a set of 18s too.

Ha ha ha. If only I could get my BMW winter wheels on it. Alas, the 5 series offset wont work with needing adaptors too.

Whilst I do miss the F11, there is no denying that the set of cars I have just now just work better for me at the moment. The Alhambra gives me all the space I need, which sadly even the boat that was the F11 did not. The Golf gives me the speed / fun I want. While it isn't any faster than the 5 series, it is MUCH more chuckable, and therefore fun. And this car will give me the extra set of wheels I need when I have to go to work.

At the end of the day, a car is just a car. I like nice cars, for sure. I am a bit of a car guy. BUT, it is still a car. I don't get overly invested, emotionally in any car I own. I like them and all that, but I don't generally "molly-coddle" my cars anymore. They are used, in the way they are meant to be used. And the F11 was a nice car, but it wasn't really fulfilling any required role properly. I now have 3 motors that each do its required role well. The F11, while nice, was just a compromise on most of these roles. A great compromise, no doubt. But a compromise just the same. If I only needed one car to attempt to do it all, yes, the F11 was a great car for that. As it is, I do require 3 cars, so why not have better suited cars for each individual role, rather than one car that is compromised on every role? And still need two other cars.

I'm not some sort of car snob really. Who needs to have a £40k motor, because anything less is beneath me. I am just as happy driving around in my 10 year old Golf as I was in my brand new 5 series. A good car is a good car, regardless of age. To me at least. I don't need to get all judgemental on the basis of price / age / brand (well, except French cars) of a car.

If it had the arches on the front it would look a little better tbh

Arches on the front?

I think "need" is a stretch. The fast/fun car is a want, rather than I "need" this :)

But yes I get what you're saying. I couldn't stomach it myself. I'm one for efficiency and cost saving.

I had a Passat Estate for about 2 months before I ran into the back of someone. They're solid cars and really not too bad at all. Sure, my A6 is significantly better in almost every aspect and a much nicer place to be, but considering how little these Passats cost these days, you can't complain.

Yours the 131PS?

Yeah, sure. The fast / fun aspect isn't a "need". An actual vehicle in that spot in the fleet is needed though. It doesn't "need" to be driven often, but there is a "need" to have a vehicle available. So why not have it as a fast / fun car, when I already have the family wagon sorted.

On the efficiency / cost saving though, it is significantly cheaper than my F11 was, and not a HUGE amount thirstier (I'm averaging 32mpg vs 40 mpg, over around 10k a year, it's not hugely significant, talking about the Edition 30 here). So not so bad. And the Passat, assuming no repairs needed between now and January when the MOT is out, should cost me less, including buying the car, insurance, tax, minor repairs, but not including fuel, than 2 months payment on my F11. So not a significant sum of money in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, its the 130, but only the 5 speed unfortunately. Can't win them all. I had a b5.5 Passat before, a few years back until my mother needed a car so I gave her that one. It was great when I had it, has needed very little since, and it's still getting used every day with around 180k on it, without any major issues.

Just get a turbo estate? Surely that equates to all 3 of your car needs in one? Space, speed, practicality and the fuel cost will be offset anyway by not having to maintain, tax and insure 3x cars.

I'm not sure how much clearer I can make it. I NEED 3 CARS.

I don't need 3 cars because of different space / speed requirements. I need 3 cars because I need 3 cars. So I get cars that fulfil different functions that I might need or want them to do. Thus I can get cars particularly suited to a particular function, rather than needing to compromise on functions.

So I have one that has the space. More space than my 5 series estate had, which wasn't quite enough to be properly comfortable for our needs, hence any old estate isn't going to cut it, since the F11 is one of the bigger estate cars on the market. This is the family car, that is generally used daily for shipping the kids about in. Used by either myself, my wife, or the babysitter when we are both working.

I have another car, the Edition 30. This is what my wife takes to work when I am away and the babysitter needs to use the Alhambra. Or we take it whenever I want a blast, or we get a night off from the kids.

Then this Passat. Whose sole purpose is to take up and down to the airport / my work, so I don't need to get taxis or public transport to get to work. And I can also use it to get up and down to the office. Again, leaving a car for my wife to get to work, and one for our babysitter. Alas, we weren't the most flush in our families, and thus our babysitters could afford their own second cars, we wouldn't really need a third. This is not the case however.

I don't see how you NEED three cars reading that. Two I could understand, but not three. Stop kidding yourself.

I don't need two cars but I have two, because I like urinating money against the wall on track days. But I don't need both and nor do I need an F10.

We have only had 2 cars for the last 18 months or so. You are, of course, correct. I don't NEED 3 cars. I can always fly out a night earlier and stay in a hotel instead of getting up at 2 in the morning to take a £130 taxi to the airport.

Or if I can get to the airport using public transport, I could get the 2 taxis and a train to get there. As I would need to do anyway when going the night before anyway. With my 3 awkward bags.

And the exact same situation on the way back (sometimes worse, the last flight back means a taxi into the middle of Aberdeen, then hang about for 90 mins for the last train, and don't get home until 1am).

So yes. I could get by with 2 cars. But to give me an extra night with the kids, and not have to mess about with trains and taxis, I'll stick with my £300 Passat and make my life a lot easier. That my mileage allowance will pay for in around 4 trips. And the fact I'm a bit older means it costs me less to insure the car for a year than it does to tax it.

Christ. It's obviously not faster, but it is significantly cheaper over the year. My boss is never "happy" about me getting a taxi, so everything is done to try to avoid that situation. So I am usually going the 2 taxis and a train route. Which is by far less convenient.

This thread is ******* awful when you have to trawl through hundreds of pages of acmedrivel just to see some cars.

We get it, you keep buying sheds and pretending you regret it and will learn next time even though you wont.

So you're having to faff around running an additional, old car (and all the fun and games that will come with it, if it fails an MOT or something) because your boss is too tight to pay for a taxi for you to go on a business trip necessary for you to do your job? Seems fair.
