That is what I have been expecting from the start, a 1080 competitor, if we're lucky, possibly better than a 1080 by 5-10% overall.

Problem there is nVidia has the scale of economics on their side with the Pascal cores and by all accounts has been holding back a top to bottom refresh with 12Gbps GDDR5X. Which they'd be able to price anything AMD can do with Vega out the market if it doesn't come out the gate with game changing performance.

Its not a complete overhaul, AMD have said as much, vega is an evolution of GCN, just a much bigger step than the previous updates.
And even if it was a whole new architecture, that still doesn't explain why 1 extra month of driver development against what is most like 18-24 months of prior driver development is going to magically change things.

It looks lie we're all relying on that stepping rumour now :D

Thing is, with all the build up to this, it seemed like the vast majority of people were expecting 1080 performance, possibly a bit more and nothing else yet now that it is looking to be just that more or less, every one is acting shocked and disappointed  Did people really think AMD would be matching or beating a 1080ti?

I still think the thing that people need to be most concerned with is the price now, given what gibbo has posted about gpu/memory prices, mining craze, nvidia cards going up in price and a 580 costing £300 now..... top end vega gaming is looking to be at the very least £400, which is what will kill the GPU completely, if they could have launched what we are seeing now at £300-350 then it would have been decent but that is looking to be a dream atm....

They didn't use to. Hawaii was the last good one sadly. Four years ago...damn. Great GPU, rubbish reference cooler.

The 390 and 390x were a good release, Two reason why.
1, No reference coolers,
2, They held back driver optimisation for Hawaii until after the release reviews were done.

They're a slippery bunch. :D

I did hope that after so long away from the high end AMD would come back with a 1080ti killer especially since that card isnt exactly new anymore.
Expectation wise i put the Gaming Vega at 1080ti levels.

At the start i was expecting slightly faster than a gtx1080 but after seeing 1600mhz core and using what Fury X could do at this i was expecting 1080ti as with the supposed ipc improvements and 2x geometry engine speed along with other improvements that's about where it should be. This card is a step back when comparing to Fury on LN2 even though in the main it is clocked just as high. Rx Vega has to step up to the plate or Vega has been a miss step and very late at that. This chip is also over 500mm2 compared to a gtx1080 of 314mm2. The gaming power is just not there for some reason and AMD have never been this far behind. The gaming version might well change this and something is drastically different.

CBA looking now but I am 95% certain that doom got about an extra 20/30 fps in a driver update for the fury x (went from like 60/70 to 80/90) and iirc, about 20 fps boost with a 480.....

So that just shows how important driver/software optimization is.

Also, remember the 780(ti) and witcher 3 release and how everyone was saying that nvidia gimped the cards..... They then worked some magic and got great performance from those gpus in the end.

Well you only have yourself to blame then :p
