yeah but that bitch will be slapped when rx vega comes out @£450 ish
It's going to need to be a lot cheaper than that!

The same performance as 15 month old tech yet with a huge deficit in power/noise/heat. Price is the only thing that could save Vega. It needs to be very cheap indeed.

So you think that I should wait?
I am itching to spend my dough!

I'm itching too. I still am running my 970 and a terrible monitor! But it's summer time and the PC doesn't get my use as it's too hot. Plus 3 weeks only left until Vega.

It's worth the wait considering it's been this long already. If nothing else I'm hoping Vega will me the 1080 cheaper. The issue is the 1000 series is 3/4 of the way through it's life cycle and still prices are as they where.

I wasn't prepared to pay the prices and I still aren't, hence why I am still running a 970.

3 more weeks is all we need to wait.

At this point they are going to struggle with making a profit and/or funding ongoing R&D if they price the card too low - there isn't really a good position for AMD here unless they can do something that makes waves in the industry.

Vega's die size is another puzzle. We also didn't get an architecture break down of FE; so we can't deduce if RX vega will be bigger or smaller than it or what all those transistors are doing.

Just went back to the financial analyst day video and AMD broke down the potential markets as follows:
Compute $1000+
Ultra - Enthusiast & high end workstation $500-$1000
Enthusiast & mid range workstation $200-$500

https://youtu.be/590h3XIUfHg (40:34)

If we give AMD the benefit of the doubt (that they aren't completely clueless); FE for compute, RX vega for the Enthusiast market?

From this I'd assume:

Compute: MI25 and Firepro
Ultra-enthusiast: FE-Vega (watercooled version counts as the 'upgraded' version, so still fits the $1000 range kind of)
Enthusiast & mid-range: RX Vega. This would then lead me to believe RX may be $300-450, or $350-500 for full-die and cut-down.

OK, so I have been waiting for the release of the VEGA for what feels like a decade,
I have the AMD Radeon R9 390. YES... I know I need an upgrade! But I thought I should buy my first home before a GPU.

At the moment I am torn, do I buy a 1070? or wait to see the full release of the VEGA range?

At this point reading the latest news, I am still thinking about waiting until the RX release and watch the performance and the prices wars.

I have in mind future proofing, G-Tax, and the similarities known to the Fury X.
Yet I am still none the wiser. I have been watching the forum and other news feeds yet lost as hell!

Can anyone shed some light? Should I be patient? As I know I should be! As frustrating as it is!

You should wait for the RX Vega release, and even after that, it's really not a great time to go out and buy a 1070, or any GPU really at this moment coz they are all massively overpriced... Not so much waiting for Vega but waiting for prices to readjust, you're talking like 450£+ for a 1070 at the moment, that's like 1080 prices a month or two ago... That being said this Ethereum craze could go on well into 2018, but the Nvidia cryptocurrency cards might smooth things out when they come out. So yeah it's worth the wait IMO.

I don’t think they will have any problem with funding ongoing R&D, most of the GPU money comes from the mainstream and they are selling every chip they can make. I expect AMD to release a limited quantity of VEGA high end cards just so they can say they released it, High end VEGA chips will likely sell better for the workstation/server markets. The lower end VEGA chips should do OK if they use cheaper VRAM and perform better than the RX 580.

I still can't get my mind around the fact that they didn't shrink Fiji just to go up against the 1070 it would have had a potentially smaller die than the 1070, a small Fiji would have been good to go up against the 1070 and below. A good slot potential between Polaris and Vega I also find it surprising as AMD aren't known for not reusing GPUs, can't remember the last time AMD didn't rebrand/refresh a GPU.

Thanks for the advise, I know that I should wait. The price doesnt worry me, I just dont want to spend money then the next week its 100 cheaper.
I just have to wait the 3 weeks and hold my neveve. Thank you guys for all you help @ Wesbo @ Opethdesciple

Fingers crossed!

For this to be their plan it'd have to be 1080 Ti performance for £350-400, or 1080 performance for no more than £300.

Their plans only really get formulated when they get working silicon and see what clocks its capable of. Polaris being a prime example, was expected to be a much better performer, didn't get the clocks it needed to be a good performer so the plans then was to waffle about it being a "disruptive" product and how it was great value for money. If it had scaled well it would have obviously been a much more expensive card. Same applies here, if this just bests a 1080 amd will have to drop the price to around 1080 levels, while knowing full well their best effort was 2016's "high end" performance.

Not really a good situation for amd if it pans out that way, they can toot their horn and play pr spin all they like, the facts will be that performance is over a year old and is no longer "high end" despite vega being their high end gpu.

Ever since Eric Demers left amd have really dropped the ball with regard to their gpu's, same could be said for Jim Keller, he left and amd cpu's tanked, he came back to help design ryzen and they're back in the game.

Well that could potentially happen with those NVidia Crypto cards, I don't know when they are due to be released ? But you can bet the miners will jump on em.

Raja when proper drivers on RX vega launch day show a big increase in performance and everyone loses their sheet.

Exactly my thought. Thats why I dont really want to wait for Crypto and I might as well upgrade when there is a price war (hopefully) and the 1080 / 1070 may drop in price or VEGA is cheaper with more FPS.

And I REALLY need a new GPU!

Out of interest how much have the 1070 shot up too also the Rx580's not been keeping an eye on it ?

Ignore nvidia for God sake.

Vega doesn't need anything from nvidia AMD fans or people just looking for better bang for buck monitor plus GPU will be watching Vega.

So what if Nvidia has had this performance for over a year it means nothing to me and am sure I not alone.

Even if Vega is the same price has 1080 AMD still offer the best complete PC setup for price and performance.
Monitors, CPU's, motherboards and GPUs

All nvidia care about is ripping of their highend market with GPU after GPU Ti ripping into the TX for example. It's a joke and only the die hard nvidia fans on here defend this practice.
