Summer Transfer Window 2017/18 - Rumours & Signings

he hasn't hit his physical prime? have you seen the size of the lad?!

edit: oh didn't realise City bought another full back as back up in Danilo. Isn't he the guy that got completely shut out of the Madrid side by Carvajal very quickly?
Does that mean anything? Carvajal is probably the best right back in the world.
I've read that Danilo is being signed as a midfielder as much as a fullback.

Will Can start if everyone's fit? Most people I've spoken to think it'll be Henderson and Wijnaldum at the moment behind the 4.

I guess the response to that is how often is everybody fit and available? Our current central midfield options are Henderson, Can, Wijnaldum, Lallana and Coutinho. Given that (for the most part) any system we play will be some kind of variation of a 3 man midfield and 2/3 of the 5 players I mentioned aren't even natural CM's, I think it's fair to say that Can will get his fair share of games.

As well as keeping Can, we desperately need to add another natural CM to our squad - if they can play in both the holding and more advanced position then great but the holding/defensive role has to be the priority. I touched on it in the pre-season thread, we can't find ourself with a midfield 3 of Wijnaldum, Lallana and Coutinho next season. To be fair to Wijnaldum, he's taken to playing in midfield like a duck to water but it's not his natural position and he's not naturally defensive enough to make up for having Lallana and Coutinho ahead of him.

Who knows whether we'll sign Keita but we need him as well as Can, not instead of. As above, we only have Can and Henderson as natural central midfielders at the moment and who knows whether Henderson's foot injury is completely behind him.

Agree about the frustrations around Can but in his defence, he really came into his own at the end of last season and was quite possibly our best player in the last couple of months.

Whats your thoughts on Grujic, or maybe even Milner filling that CM berth? I think this will be a make or break season for Hendo, can he stay fit or is he a another sturridge :(

I still think central defender is more important position to fill, outside of Matip, the rest of our CB's are very poor, at least we have a LB now.

lol at people thinking coutinho is better than eriksen, ?

But he is

I don't see any teams chasing Eriksen, Alli or Son yet. Probably because they aren't that good yet;).

Ok, enough of this now. Let's get back to transfers.

Apologies for bring this up again but I think Eriksen has been reading these forums and wanted to make a point last night :D Fast forward to 1 minute mark

Grujic is an interesting one. He's massive and clearly talented but he looks incredibly raw and somebody that will need to be eased in slowly. If he plays regularly we'll be playing with 10 men a lot too because he really does love a needless lunging tackle. Milner can obviously play in midfield if needed but if pre-season is anything to go by, he's still seen as a left back first and foremost. Also, even if you play him in midfield, like most of our midfielders he's somebody that will want to play/more comfortable playing in the more advanced roles of a 3 man midfield and isn't a natural in a 2 man midfield.

Hopefully Henderson's injury is behind him now but I really wouldn't like to go into a season without adding another centre mid that's comfortable either holding in a 3 man midfield or a central 2 man midfield. Henderson and Can (maybe Wijnaldum at a push) are our only midfielders that are comfortable in a holding midfield role or you wouldn't be scared playing them in a 2 man midfield and 12 months ago if you asked either of them or supporters what their best position was, most would say box to box midfield.

As for our defence, as I keep saying, the quality (or lack of) of our defenders is exaggerated by how we play. Lovren looked great at Southampton after all. Being a CB for this Liverpool side is a really big challenge though. Take yesterday as an example - our 2 full backs are naturally midfield players, our holding midfielder is naturally an attacking/creative midfielder and our 2 box to box players are naturally attacking mids/fowards/wingers.

Despite that, yea, we definitely could do with a CB and I'm sure we'll sign one but right now if you gave me a choice of a CB or CM, I'd take the CM all day. With Gomez and Sakho still around at least we've got some cover at CB but we're a Henderson or Can injury away from being really short in CM.

I like Can..in fact , I am one of the few people I know who has always liked Can (he comes in for a lot of stick from fans) , having said that...if Juventus want to give us £30m for him, I'd sell.

My criticisms of Can haven't been down to his ability but his decision making and inability to make the most of his talent. As above though, he really came into his own at the back end of last season and there's no a chance I'd sell him for £30m.

We're already short of central midfielders and would struggle to sign an established, ready made replacement for £30m. You only have to look at our pursuit of Keita to see that as soon as we go for a player of any note, the price goes through the roof.
Sigh, I used to think you were an alright member what happened
I'm no longer alright, I'm now amazing?

Seems like this Neymar to PSG deal could actually be happening, but I'll believe it when I see it.

£196m release clause, 6 year deal at £500,000 per week.
