Summer Transfer Window 2017/18 - Rumours & Signings

Always found it annoying that player contracts were essentially worthless. Signed a 5 year contract 6 months ago? Player stamps foot demanding a move and club have to capitulate.

*Please note I would be fine with VVD doing this.

Be interesting to see how Coutinho reacts and performs considering he wants to leave.

In one way I think it's good that clubs are standing up to other clubs/players, but on the other hand i'm not sure it's the wisest move.
This always gets said but how often do we see players not perform when they don't get their move? I can think of far more players that have been kept against their wishes that have continued to play at a high level than those that haven't. Players will want to leave and might kick up a fuss to force a move but as soon as it's no longer possible for them to do so, what reason do they have for not performing and how will it benefit them.

In recent years I can only think of Berahino that's just down tools and look how that worked out for him.

The risk to Liverpool (or any other club in this situation) isn't really whether the player will perform but whether they'll ever get the chance to sell for that price again.

It works both ways though. How many times do clubs sign a player and 6 months or a year later they're trying to sell them?

How often do players who have openly expressed a desire to leave, putting in a transfer request not got their move? Sometimes it's a ploy to get more cash but most of the time a player who genuinely wants to leave get what they want.

It can go one of two ways, he will either not perform or he will knuckle down and be a professional.

A few more details of the bid are coming out. It turns out it wasn't £114m rising to £118m. It was £82m rising to £114m, possibly rising further to £118m - no idea what the difference is between the add-ons that take it to £114m and the extra £4m.

Plenty of players have wanted to leave, not got their way and eventually accepted the decision. Ronaldo a year before he joined Real, Modric (to Chelsea) the year before he signed for Real, Mascherano to Barca the year before he left, Fabregas to Barca the season before he left, Suarez the year before he moved, Schneiderlin the year before he left Southampton.

I honestly can't think of any other (relatively) high profile examples other than Berahino that have not just got on with things.

Plenty, yet there are plenty more who asked for a transfer and got it. Player power is rife in the game.

Whether he will knuckle down remains to be seen, which is what I said originally, we don't know how he will react. It's an expensive risk imo.

Berahino obviously springs to mind, hasn't Ben Arfa done it multiple times? Payet refused to play. Didn't Gallas say he was going to score own goals if Chelsea didn't sell him?

I could be making that up, it's a while back.

So Gabriel had left Arsenal for Valencia on a 5 yr deal. Shame it didn't work out for him, quite liked him but didn't think he was that good to have a starting place.

In more ridiculous transfer news, Inter have somehow made contact with Mustafi...truly lolworthy that is lol. Mustafi hasn't been with us that long and I haven't heard any rumblings that he wants to leave. But if it is true as lolworthy as it is, £100 mill and Inter are welcome to him.

Might as wel join in the ridiculous transfer fees being thrown about.

I completely understand that lots of players who want to move end up getting their way. I thought the question was how Coutinho would react if he doesn't get his way. History suggests that the vast majority of players that are put in the position knuckle down - again I can only think of Berahino in recent years that hasn't.

Looking at the way this transfer window is going, it looks like we're going to have plenty of future examples as Coutinho appears to be just 1 of many players that don't look like getting their way.

I can think of a few which I edited in above, but not that many, can't remember if they were sold before being forced to stay some of them were a while back.

I guess we will see what happens in the next couple of weeks, if he keeps his head down and doesn't kick up a fuss I would assume he will be fine.

I'm not sure what the situation with Ben Arfa was but both Payet and Gallas left during the window they kicked up the fuss in - they weren't forced to stay.

And you're right re Gallas - it was reported that he threatened to score an own goal (iinm he subsequently played the game and didn't) if he wasn't sold and he was eventually sold as part of the Cole to Chelsea deal.

VVD is another one that will be interesting if he doesn't get moved on, will Saints sell? He's obviously kicked off big time so might be hard for him to come back into the fold if they try and force him to stay.

What's most interesting in the VvD saga is Southampton's stance. Liverpool, Utd, Arsenal and Spurs all didn't want to sell Masch, Suarez, Ronaldo, Fabregas or Modric - money wasn't a motivation to them but Southampton have shown that their entire business plan has been to buy well and sell on for a huge profit. For Liverpool they'd happily keep Coutinho for another season even if it meant getting £15-20m less next summer. Would that make as much sense to Southampton with VvD?

Add Costa to the list as well, be interesting as he wants to go back to Athletico but they can't sign anyone until Jan so what does he do, down tools for 6 months in a World Cup year?

The Costa transfer isn't a case of the club wanting to keep the player though. Costa wants to leave and Chelsea want to sell him (didn't Conte text him to say he had no future at the club?) - the problem is that Chelsea hoped he'd got to China for stupid money but that never materialised and Costa's holding out for a return to Atletico who can't sign him yet and won't pay a big fee for him.

Spurs have signed Davinson Sanchez from Ajax subject to medical.

Thats not strictly true is it, they CAN sign him they just cant register / play him (like Barca summer before last who got Turan? who couldnt play for several months)?

Atleti probably dont want his wages on their books for that time admittedly (the difference in the suitable size of the fee is probably whats holding up the deal at a guess)

I reckon they don't want Costa atm, if they did sell greizeman then I think Costa would have gone there all ready.

Costa will end up moving next summer when greizeman leaves imo
