Pewdiepie racism

The streaming community is becomming more and more cancerous (not a nice word to use I know but really it's best way to describe it) i'm noticing.

A lot of oldies won't know what i'm on about but basically if you look up reddit/r/livestreamfail, streamers like Ice Poseidon, Hampton Brandon etc all encourage really toxic ****. Their communities are terrible and the edgelord racism is rife. It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't grown up in this generation but Jesus.... sooo much toxicity in the streaming community.

IMO - nothing. But if you tell people they CANT say things unless you think its okay - that's a terrible message to send to young people.
However teaching the kids that what you say has consequences in terms of your employment status if you do it "on the job" or whilst representing a company in any form is a big lesson, one that a lot of people seem to have forgotten with the advent of Facebook and Twitter.

Agree... but dont agree with activists pressuring employers into sacking people.

Not just the streaming community. Just a general race to the bottom in all forms of online media.

Doesn't matter if what you say is right/wrong/true/false/racist/abusive or whatever. If it gets clicks then you get paid.

This week its the n word. Next week it could be something else.

Tell kids what it means, teach them the history, advise them about usage. Don't just tell them not to say it.

There's a difference between telling kids not to say it, and pretending it doesn't exist.

No one is trying to say the word never existed, of course we should all know about the history of the word. To bundle saying we should never use it in with ignoring all that is a stupid assumption.

Why is this forum always "think of the children!".

Parent your damn kids. Someone live streaming stuff which isn't acceptable for kids? Internet doesn't have outside watershed times. Go check out what they are watching. This guy is not a CBBC presenter.

He's an idiot sure but don't use him as a scapegoat for "the children".

Not sure anyone is saying any of the things you're arguing against. The entire point of publicising something like this is to make it clear that he's not someone suitable for kids. Given his past relationships with Disney it would be reasonable to assume he was.

Children's entertainer uses '****ing n****r' as a curse at someone on air, and people are surprised there's reaction?

At least it'll serve to educate some parents as to the kind of language these YouTube stars are normalising for their kids.

He is not a kids entertainer. I mean the guy I quoted is right maybe it will wake up the parents. But this whole thread shouldn't need kids to be brought up. Yeah he had a relationship with Disney but as far as I can see is wasn't for content aimed at kids. Note that Disney Maker Studios have signed Snoop Dogg and his YouTube channel WestFestTV... soooo lol.

I think the problem is the context how he used the word. It's not like he was joking with his black friends who he knows or singing along to a rap song. Both of those would have been fine, imo.
But he literally said it out of frustration and meant it as an insult. It's not like he even said it directed at a black person, he literally uses the word as an insult. I think that's the problem.

Am I offended by him? Yes, but that was way before this. I just hate his entire presentation. Scream. Overreact. Shout gibberish. Profit.

I see it as passive racism - not using it in the correct context, but using the word as an insult nevertheless. That either indicates an extreme level of ignorance or a wilful disregard of the connotations of the word. Either way he's an idiot and it'll be interesting to see how the back-pedaling develops.
