Pewdiepie racism

He knows his audience well and teenage boys love this edgy sense of 'humour' sure he may lose a few sponsors but his view and subscriber count stays strong which is his main concern.

Is PewDiePie a white hood wearing, Hitler loving bigot full of hate? In my opinion, no.

Is PewDiePie an idiot? Yes

Its normal to vent anger and frustration playing online games, people curse, people swear, people insult each other, but do people use racial slurs? Personally I never have but apparently in PewDiePie's case yes. Does using the N word make him racist though? No.

He has come out and made a humble apology in a short video and its the right thing to do financially for him whether he agrees that he should have to or not.

The N word is given too much importance these days, and the ********* police will jump upon anyone who uses it. Is it right that they do this? No, and we have to get over the idea that anyone who uses it is a racist.

We live in a world where it is used regularly within music, movies and other media elements. Its to some extent normalized. If you are black apparently its ok to use it, its not a slur, but I find this theory flawed. To me its the same as saying that because I am married to an Indian lady (which I am) I can use whatever racist slurs against them because ...hey I cant be racist can I?

If we accept that its offensive, it needs to be offensive full stop whoever uses it, and this simply isnt the case.

Saying all this though people who live on advertiser income and sponsorship though need to play by the rules to get paid. This means that they have to be as clean as a whistle to maintain their income flow. Many people in the public space have walked the plank for less after an uncomfortable podium speech where they make a speech proclaiming that they have let themselves and their friends and family down. PewDiePe's recent video has done the same.

I dont like his content, but 50 million other people do, and for their sake I hope he doesnt get shamed for something that is beyond trivial.

Because he is using racist language. You're hardly going to say "******* N*****s" aimed at a bunch of white people, are you? He could've used any word in the whole English language yet that word was the worst word he could think of in the heat of the moment and just slipped off his tongue.

do we actually know the race of the gamer in this instance, AFAIK people in this game apparently do use the word regularly and so quite literally are using it aimed at a bunch of white people rather frequently

Does it really matter who it was aimed at? He got angry and used that word. It doesn't matter if it was aimed at someone black/white/green/purple or an inanimate object. He used it in a negative way.

I don't understand how people are defending this. I'm not even suggesting he is a full on racist. Just he must be cool with a bit of casual racism (probably more due to ignorance than actually hating people who look different) if that word slips off his tongue in anger so easily.

He messed up and he has acknowledged he messed up (be it for the second time, how long until the third?) yet people are acting as if he did nothing wrong. Amazing.

I've not defended it, I've just pointed out that your post was flawed re: it not being aimed at white people - you brought it up not me

Heat of the moment? In a game? If it was a real battlefield I could maybe understand but a video game? You spawn, you die. It's a game.

I agree that it's just a game and of trivial significance, but have you not played a game that you found totally engrossing and/or extremely frustrating?

Personally I have raged due to frustration at a game, which is both out of character and to my mind infantile behaviour.

Are we not allowed to have a discussion without personal emotions? Even for those who seem to think we'll twist it and make out certain people are sensitive souls that has never heard such language?

Yes you are allowed to have the discussion, just as I am allowed to present my view in relation to the incident and comment on others position.

How can my post be flawed? Why would Mr Racist (not speaking of PDP) shout that a bunch of white kids? Does that even make sense? PDP does't know who he is playing against, it could've been anyone. That doesn't make what he did any less bad. He just flat out shouldn't have done what he did and should've known better.

He has since come out and held his hands up. People need to move on.

It doesn't have to make sense. Your post is be flawed because you claim you're hardly going to say those words to a bunch of white people yet that is seemingly what these gamers frequently do - that's all.

OK. What I meant is you're hardly going to use those words in person to a white person. No one knows who he said those words to but that is neither here or there. He just shouldn't have used those words.

I'd suspect (but don't know for sure) that you'd be wrong there in real life too given how casually some of these kids are using the word towards literally anyone online - it seems to have been turned into a general insult in the way they're using it like calling someone a 'faggot'/'fag' without any link/reference to homosexuality. I agree that he shouldn't have used those words and was an idiot for doing so.

I wouldn't say it has been put to that level, personally (But then I guess it depends where you are in the world. We, in the UK, are far less divisive based on race than somewhere such as the US. At least that's what I think). But we both agree that he was an idiot for saying it. People just need to move on, there are far more worrying things going on in the world currently than a guy saying one word.

I didn't mean to imply that it had in general but just in the context that these kids are using it as it quite obviously is being used regardless of race.

Because he is using racist language.

And you use violent, sexual, scatalogical and/or blasphemous language (you said you swear at people in games)...and don't mean it that way.

You're hardly going to say "******* N*****s" aimed at a bunch of white people, are you?

He might. It depends on what he meant by it. Who did he say it to in this case?

He could've used any word in the whole English language yet that word was the worst word he could think of in the heat of the moment and just slipped off his tongue.

The whole thing is a storm in a teacup but it's odd seeing people saying what he did isn't that bad. I don't know many people that casually slip out racist terms, regardless if he meant it in a malicious way, in day to day life or whilst playing games.

He said a racist remark. He's been rightly shamed for it. The world will go on.

You're assuming racism. It's possible for offensive words to be used as generic offensive words, i.e. without the original reason why they became offensive. It's also hard to give examples on a forum which forbids the use of a list of words regardless of context, but I'll try by using an example which changed in that way long enough ago to probably no longer on that list:

If a person says "Damn!" today, it's hardly considered offensive at all. It's a minor expression of annoyance. Its original meaning is extremely harsh and offensive - it was an attempt to invoke divine power to curse someone or something in a society in which most people believed in such things.

Maybe he's racist. Maybe he's slightly ahead of the curve in the change of meaning of the word.

It's also possible for words to have their meaning changed and narrowed, in this case referring to a specific crude, violent subculture. I recall seeing a comedian doing a sketch about the difference in meaning, but of course the video would be forbidden here because the censorship here pays no attention to context.
