Pewdiepie racism

Definitely wouldn't say he is "a racist" after this, but he has used a racist term and so for once this is actually news-worthy. I've never used the word so i was pretty surprised to hear him use it, it must slip out regularly when he is in private circles seeing as he has "accidentally" let slip it live on air which makes it a bit more shocking. He's effectively poured genuine fuel on flames that were originally lit by ******** :/

I like pewdiepie but I can see why people might be raging from this incident.

Maybe it's time for him to just step back and enjoy his wealth.

As I see it you generally don't let something slip in a moment of annoyance in public, unless you are probably used to using it in private, as when annoyed and not thinking about what you're saying you tend to go with your defaults.

As I've said before I honestly haven't come across someone using that word in any online game I've been involved in, and for a few years I was playing CS, Team Fortress etc on a regular basis with some fairly potty mouthed people.

In my experience to the groups i play with everyone is pretty mature and the average age is like 30 or so? i didn't take a census but generally almost everyone is older than me, roughly the same age, and very few people are like 20 or so.

Occasional casual racism but it is said in terms of joking, rather than a statement of disgust, usually among our members to each other, keep in mind that nobody has ever complained to me about the behavior of anyone (there are roughly 40-50 people online in teamspeak at a time). But this is serious gaming, it is not casual.

If i talk about casual CS:Source servers, i used to play to pass the time in the old days the toxic levels are completely off the chart. If i play public in the game above the toxic behavior is also off the chart but that is due to being famous basically, so the haters and trolls simply must type something into chat when they see me, or anyone from our group.

Agreed, i think that's the worst part. As in that split second it became clear it's in his vocabulary. I too have never used it, and if i ever felt a need to use it for whatever reason i honestly think i'd stutter on it, so i struggle to see how he can just do it when live. With that said, all online games now are super toxic. I hear the N word atleast every other CS:Go game and voice based games like "comedy night" are incredibly racist although they're a huge attraction for trolls.

Its not complicated here, the N word isn't acceptable, its not SJW or liberal or an indication of an overly PC society, its been unacceptable for a long long time. Just like many racial slurs.

Unless the person saying it is black, then it's fine of course.

From a 'devils advocate' aspect I also find it strange that it's not racist to ban someone from saying a word just because of their skin colour.

:D

Just to mix it up.

He isn't English. The n word means nothing racist really in Swedish, at least to the people I spoke to. One even said it's used when people want to call someone stupid. Not racist..
I'm not going to post the real racist words In Swedish, probably get a ban cos of the filter.

Of course he is a world wide celeb so take that with a huge pinch of salt. He should still know better.

Remember I do live in North Sweden and they are all cowboys and frontiers weirdos, at least most of them....

Well I'm glad he manned up and apologised and acknowledged he has some responsibility to his audience, so I guess that's already better than most the people out there who are too arrogant to see their mistakes.

I disagree. I think him using the word as an insult mean he knows it has negative associations with it and he still chose that word to insult someone in anger.

That's not what we disagree on. It's obvious that an insult has negative associations - that's why it's an insult.

Where we disagree is on what the negative associations necessarily are. This is what I wrote:

If it's being used simply as an insult, it's not necessarily being used in a racist way. In a similar fashion, if someone says they entered an area in a game and got raped by ogres or whatever, they probably don't mean actual rape. 50 years ago there wouldn't have been any question about any use of the Magic Word being very racist. Today, there is.

You disagree...but why?

I don't know about you but I have never, not once, let out a racial slur online due to anger. I May well say swear words but no racist term has ever left my lips whilst playing a game. The fact it came off his tongue in the heat of the moment suggests this is something he says often.

Even if he does, that doesn't necessarily mean he's using it in a racist way. Similarly, you swearing doesn't necessarily mean you're using the words in a sexual or scatalogical or blasphemous way (depending on what words you use). Or, referring to my previous example, that the player's character actually got raped by ogres or whatever.

I don't recall making any simple insults at anyone in a game. I don't swear at other people in a game, either. NPCs, yes. Actual people, no.

When's the last time you called someone the N word in anger? Of all the words, why that one? Because he uses it behind the scenes, because he's not racist but sometimes cracks racist jokes with his close buddies. Because he meticulously cleans gym equipment after a black man used it but doesn't bother much if a white man did. Because some people are racist, they can't help themselves but they can n should keep their filthy mouths shut least.

You know him that well? Or are you just making that stuff up?

You disagree...but why?

Because he is using racist language. You're hardly going to say "******* N*****s" aimed at a bunch of white people, are you? He could've used any word in the whole English language yet that word was the worst word he could think of in the heat of the moment and just slipped off his tongue.

The whole thing is a storm in a teacup but it's odd seeing people saying what he did isn't that bad. I don't know many people that casually slip out racist terms, regardless if he meant it in a malicious way, in day to day life or whilst playing games.

He said a racist remark. He's been rightly shamed for it. The world will go on.
