If CPU A is running at a clock rate of 4.7Ghz and is executing 100% Instructions vs CPU B running at 4.0Ghz executing 100% Instructions then CPU B is exicuting the same number of Instructions as CPU A at a lower clock rate, it is executing more "Instructions Per Clock"
I see the point you're trying to make. But my question is, why is it "per clock" instead of "per second"; since according to Wikipedia Clock rate = clock cycles per second?
 
I think that's why he said, in Geekbench at least. It is one of the less balanced benchmarks, and it's not something I would ever solely base a decision on, it's almost as bad as using just PC Mark. This thread would be barren without small bits of information, even if they aren't always hugely reliable once it is finally released.

Speaking of releases, it looks like the 8350K is going to be about £175, so basically they have reduced the i5 7600K, down by £50
my bad didn't notice that
 
30 games is a lot of games and engines, it's not specific. You're creating a lie based on that chart either way. Same as I would be if I said the 7770K has such high IPC that it's faster than 6 cores

Cheapest $159 CAD (around £118 inc VAT) MSI Z370-A PRO motherboard with 6 phase power look much better and cheaper than cheapest £121.99 MSI Z270 PC Mate motherboard aimed for business solutions lacked phase power. Also cheaper than £162.95 AM4 MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon AMD X370 motherboard which has 8+2 phase power.

What I don't get is the top of the range MSI Goldlike. Are they mad? Who's going to spend north of £400 for a dead end board with no upgrade path, regardless how good its.

Thats money someone could spend on X299/X399 platform, knowing that would last 2 generations at LEAST! (3 in the case of the X399).

But the sad thing is the X299 Carbon or Tomahawk, are far cheaper and if someone sells the gift AIO for less than half the money!!!!!

IPC is how many Instructions the CPU can execute for every Mhz. if CPU A can execute 2 Instructions for every clock cycle vs only 1 on CPU B then CPU A is faster as its doing more per clock cycle.

Mhz are how many clock cycles (Transistor switching) the CPU is running at per second.

Edit: so CPU B would have to run twice as fast (3Ghz vs 6Ghz) as CPU A to keep up as A is executing twice as many instructions for every cycle.

Clockspeed is the amount of "pulses". So it's x amount of pulses per second.

The same doesn't really apply to IPC

Assuming 8700K is using Ring topology and not Mesh (it matters).

We have atm 3 CPUs (i7 7640X, 7740X, 7800X) on the X299 platform competing with 3 (i3-8350K, i5-8600K, 8700K) on the Z370 platform respectively.
(yes 8600K could be better than the 7740X but for the sake of no 4c/8t in Z370).
And we can add the not so great performance of the 7820X in the mix, because it is borders the pointless CPU category also against the 8700K in gaming performance.


If the 8700K is using Mesh and not Ring topology, makes the whole lineup of the Z370 CPUs pointless against Intels X299 products, and especially terrible value for money against the AMD Ryzen products.
And anyone having X99 6-8 core CPU like myself, shouldn't even consider them.

Which personally I do atm (8700K), until AMD releases the next CPU lineup at 4.5Ghz+. Because I do not want to have 2 systems setup.
Need a machine with good high speed single thread perf for MMOs, CK2, WOT pushing the 1080ti, and adequate multithread for rendering.

And if the 8700K has Mesh topology, I am getting a 7740X and a 1920X, which is going to cost me bit more, but well. I can do it

Its been said over and over, the 8700k does not use mesh. Its using the same ringbus that kabylake uses.
 
#1 You obviously didn't even bother to read my post before going on the attack because if you did you would know that i didn't say "Ryzen has the best IPC on the planet" < your words; i didn't even say "Ryzen has the best IPC" what i said was it was subjective, in one instance Intel has higher IPC in another the Ryzen CPU. "ITS SUBJECTIVE".
That's not what the term subjective means, what you are describing is a variance of objective data which can be objectively analysed.
What some people do is to look at a small subset of data and extrapolate wildly from that due to naivety, ignorance or pure bias.
That is not being subjective but plain incorrect.
Subjective in this case would be to play a game on 2 or more systems with different hardware configurations and to give impressions on how they appeared without any objective data.

The Z270-A starts at £95!!

So now the cheapest Z370 motherboards have a price increase??

It's (barely) cheaper than x370 because it's half featured in comparison. B350 would be your go-to here (eg 6 power phases on the Z370-A PRO, and even then most B350 have 8 or so)... So now you're looking at £118 Z370 vs maybe £60 for more phases on B350.
 
The combination of IPC, cores and clockspeed is what determines the overall speed of a cpu, coupled with how effectively an application can use that cpu or how well optimised that software is.

Whilst intel has a significant clockspeed advantage and AMD a significant core (per£) advantage it's down to the application to favour an individual cpu. Given most people run dual core laptops for non gaming scenarios (sadly) that's where the optimisation will remain.

Whilst a tiny fraction of games are starting to benefit from more cores this doesn't mean it's worthwhile yet to change to the current crop of multiple core cpus which don't offer an advantage over quad core in current gaming scenarios and won't cut the mustard in a few years time when software starts to take advantage of multicores.

Objective - Observation of measurable facts
Subjective - Personal opinions, assumptions, interpretations and beliefs

Data gathered in a review, as long as it is made public, as to how the test were carried out, with no bias would be Objective, as they are measurable facts, not someones opinion. However the conclusion, and thoughts based from the data are subjective, as data interpretation has taken place.

I am aiming this at no one, just some people don't have a dictionary :p
