Mass Shooting in Las Vegas

How does losing a pilots licence equate to not being allowed to own a gun? What mental tests exactly? Are we talking some straight maths exams, or something actually alluding to his mental health?

They said he failed his mental assessment to renew his licence. No idea what that entails in the states

Yeah, if you are not mentally stable enough to fly a plane then I'd suggest that you are not also mentally stable enough to own a machine gun
But hey, MuuurrrrrrICA

it would be a pretty big reason actually for the casino owners... anyway feel free to correct me on the slim chance that they're installed but I suspect they won't be any time soon

IIRC Vegas you can pretty much walk in - not even id checked (though I suspect some use facial recognition for banned people, etc.).

They already do well some of them anyway, so no need to correct you since you weren't correct to begin with. Westgate casino hotel has them installed or in the process of having them installed and guess what the are pretty non intrusive. Guess more will follow.

so one hotel... ergo it is still hardly surprising to find that a hotel doesn't have them (which is what the comment was)... doesn't exactly sound like airport style security either - more like London night club style security still better than nothing for that one venue perhaps

Googling suggests its a pilot program that they started installing a 4-5 months ago and most don't.

I imagine a lot more will though after this.

So does the Stratosphere Hotel and a few others. It doesn't need to be airport style security, that was a example used to counter your heavy traffic reasoning which wasn't very reasoned I felt.

Americans are mad. After you've bought your bread and milk at your local Walmart you can then pop over to the other side of the shop and choose from a selection of semi automatic guns and ammo and buy and walk out with them there and then ...

If you think a metal detector would have stopped this clearly determined and resource rich nutter from committing mass murder then you are deluded!
He would have simply chosen another location to commit his vile massacre :(

it is perfectly well reasoned - Casino owners don't want people to have to faff about and queue up to get into their properties thus airport style security would be both expensive and undesirable

The story on the BBC has a recording of the police radio from the team that found him in the room.

1) pretty crazy how that isn’t encrypted traffic
2) he had “multiple firearms”. Does make you wonder if he just rocked up with a suitcase full of guns.

it is indeed - I think the same situation is true of Chicago PD, where some people even do live streams on the internet of their radio chat as it is often rather eventful. And yup it seems that is basically what he's done

They don't need airport style security, the example I gave is apt.

well you brought up airport security - the example you gave is a trial at a hotel - in general, in Vegas Casinos, there are no metal detectors to scan guests thus going back to the original point it isn't particularly supposing that there weren't any metal detectors for this guy to go through!

You are absolutely right about that.

Metal detectors aren't very practical at hotels, plus they are going to be resisted by the most hotels imo. Not only are they off putting for customers (suggesting both the area & hotel has a weapons/violence problem) but it's another faff and pain in the *** that people will despise.

The 'explosive material' found at his apartment was simply the compound used for exploding targets, loads of people have it and it's easily bought at gun shows.

The stuff is:

That was just an example for your heavy traffic argument and it served its purpose nicely. Vegas hotels do have metal detectors as I've already demonstrated (you were wrong)

Anyhow the Wynn Hotel Vegas too

We have another group of a half a dozen seals team six guys and CIA guys who are a counterterrorism unit that ... relate on a daily basis to Homeland Security, the FBI and Metro," he said. "My company has metal detectors and devices at every entrance of the building for employees and guests."

The Wynn Casinos as of last November started to prohibit guns and use metal detectors, making it clear guns are not allowed.
