Hurricane Ophelia to Brush the Azores This Weekend; May Affect Ireland Next Week

Unlikely - this is almost unprecedented - a warm trough ahead of it has facilitated a setup we pretty much never see - but likely still going to come fairly far short of that and this is a really unlikely event in the first place.

Any chance in the near future the UK could see a low category hurricane make landfall?

It is possible, but highly unlikely with North Atlantic water temperatures ... It happened in 1961 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Debbie_(1961) which also made landfall in Ireland. Of course 30 years tomorrow was the great storm, which was not a hurricane, but, did contain hurricane force winds.

It could be very nasty for western Ireland and further afield tomorrow.

well theres a 26.5ft long period swell hitting tommorow afternoon ,may be a caes of watching rarther than surfing (unless im newquay way for the sheltered beaches)

Well bloody hell  When I saw the headlines I thought as in a late American hurricane's tail end throwing the UK a bit of wind and rain, not the situation that's actually lead to a hurricane forming this far east. Fascinating!

Yeah it formed something like 900 miles further than normally furthest extent expected.

It is quite an odd setup in general so I think the models might be a off a little compared to what might happen though not sure in what way.

I think this is spot on, how can they be 100% on where it tracks at this point, especially as its way outside a normal event, I work in Ayr so could be an interesting Tuesday.

Built a bit of a lean-to greenhouse earlier in the year, I guess this time tomorrow I'll know how sturdy it is. :D

As much as I like the warm, it's concerning really and only going to get worse over time due to global warming.
global warming is a lie .. there is no physical way heat can control earth as there is no glass of any kind the heat over the last 20 yrs was due to a solar maximum which is now gone ....
over the next 35yrs its only going to get colder

Showing up on my phone wallpaper now :/

Looks interesting.
Is that a live wallpaper/weather app?

Weather becomes interesting globally.

No.
Human activities transform energy from one form to another. Fossil fuels directly go to poluttion and added heat.
Why are big city centres or downtowns much warmer than the surroundings of the same city? Because humans make it so!

It would appear that it is not expected to lose any power or wind strength now before landfall.
Met errieann have upgraded their warning afaik to red for the entire island.
I believe all schools are closed.
The hurricane isn’t being downgraded to tropical storm, it is being name changed to ex-orphelia. This is due to shape and structure changes meaning it is no longer a hurricane, but it retains the wind strengths of one.

In northern ireland it would appear we are taking the view that no one has told us what to do, and by the time it gets here school might be over anyway.
I would prefer not to have to drive home tomorrow afternoon, but such is life.
I think it’ll be the worst winds i have ever experienced here anyway in fourty years.

Weather update from Edinburgh, rained a bit over nght but not a breath of wind so far. Perfect weather for walking my cat Millie.

Edit. 09.30 very black sky's here now, looking ominous.
