Electric bicycle rider taken off roads for one year

I had a 3kw ebike and it scared me ******** so god knows what 11kw is like! Accelerating to 40mph with the front wheel spinning all the way was interesting! Sold the kit soon after building it.

Thing is, being hit by a cyclist doing 30+mph is probably going to do way more damage than being hit by a car. It's a much smaller surface area and no crumple zones to absorb the impact.

That and the tyres and frame probably isn't built to sustain that kind of speed.

You could say the same about a motorbike, and that actually has a fair shot at getting up to 30mph, unlike a bicyle which typically won't see 30mph without gravitational assistance.
 
Well, yea a motorbike will do a lot of damage. But bikers have to pass practical and theory tests. They also don't hop on pavements, rarely jump red generally don't ride close to where people are walking.

Actually no, as there is a lot more mass to a car than a cycle. Also, 80% of that mass can part company and go in a different direct in the event of a collision (i.e. the rider). And you say no crumple zone - a rider crumples way more effectively than a car bonnet.

If you want to talk about lawbreakers, you can't just restrict it to cyclists.

A rider won't crumple against another person, especially if they bash heads. A car bonnet/bumper will fold in very easily and soften the blow.

Yawn. Most cyclists don't do that either. I might just as well say that all motorcyclists accelerate like maniacs and cruise at 100mph.
 
A rider coming off the bike will take most of the momentum with them, as they are many times more heavy than the bike. Regardless, i think the speed thing is more about control, rather than collision safety. I imagine keeping a road-bike converted to an electric bike at 30mph is scary on a poor surface road, while a moped is a cakewalk

Yea great, but I see cyclists jumping lights daily. In London groups of them will just float across a pedestrian crossing when the light is red and pedestrians are on it. I've yet to see a motorbike doing it...

Centre of mavity, innit. On a road bike you're talking about 70Kg or thereabouts balanced on 10Kg of bike a metre above the ground. A moped weighs 100Kg or more, and that's half a metre off the ground with you on top of it.

I know the physics of it :p, my point was more of a reply about why everything doesnt have the same speed restrictions

Sorry, I was agreeing with you, not trying to give you a lecture :p

I know I'm pretty edgy once I'm hitting 30mph or more because I know that one slip can mean trouble very fast.
 
Every morning I see cyclists jumping reds and nearly being squashed through their own impatience. Every afternoon I pick my child up from after school club we run the gauntlet of cyclists who are a law unto themselves right outside a primary school

And those bikes are far more deadly than cars, too! You must see people killed on a daily basis :eek:

Yawn. Every morning I see car drivers jumping reds and nearly hitting other cars through their own impatience. Every afternoon I do something and a thing happens and I make up a story about it on the Internet.

Exactly, road safety is about control rather than speed. People often mistake the speed point about the danger involved when hitting people at that speed or with reaction time. While the reaction time may play a part in deciding local limits due to roads having poor visibility or being near schools where children may run out and cross at any given moment, it can be boiled down to having less time to control your vehicle in case you require it. Some vehicles are harder to control than others on the same roads, so large vehicles can often face lower limits.

Looks like you did a pretty good job there. I wish I'd gotten a battery bag for under the crossbar now as mine is hella heavy on the rear end.

21700 batteries are coming on stream now so I might have a go at building a custom battery housing.

My ebike build <--- link coz I skipped to the last 2 mins (the interesting bit)
