GPU prices go boom

Those with virtual fortunes better start thinking about how they are going to cash in, as the reputation of virtual currency goes lower it will end up being impossible to realise any profits , purely due to lack of traceability.

It's amazing how slow and stupid the international community is,

You know..We can and do pull our coins/money/profits out regularly to an actual bank and then spend it it actual shops. Its not monopoly money.

Would PC gamers really go to console due to pricing though? I wouldn't.

No way I could go from 144fps + at 2K down to 30FPS at 1080p. I've tried playing my PS4 after I got my PC and just can't do it!

Fair point.

Is this likely to be a temporary boom in pricing?
I don't think it is temporary. I think the market is resetting itself in the same way that premium iPhones now cost £800-£1000 when previously the top price for a smart phone was £500-£600.

We are seeing Samsung releasing super massive TVs that are expected to cost up to £10,000.

I expect in future that all top end graphics cards, Nvidiaxx80Ti etc, will cost £800+ from now on. Expect xx80s to be £600+ and xx70s to be £400+

I bought my old GTX 970 for £269.99. You'll never get a GTX xx70 model graphics card at that price ever again.

yes, now the inflation is being controlled by amd, they are the ones who choose to keep stock low, they can very well ramp up production if they want to.
and the first thing that will happen when gpu stock increase, the mined crypto value will start dropping slowly, ppl in for quick profit will unload their coins, which speeds up the devaluation, put ppl in panic and bursts the buble, miners unload their gpus , price goes down and amd gets stuck with crapload of stock unsold, and you swimming in 100$ 580's.
this is one of the reasons AMD is going to focus on semi-custom graphics and integrated graphics for the next couple year, discrete gpu wont change in the amd side, but nvidia might increase performance and reduce prices of their lineup, it all depand on how hard apu and kaby G will affect their sales.

I've bough an Xbox One X and I'm about as hardcore a PC enthusiast as you'll see. Also unless you're running older games or lower setting you won't be seeing 144 FPS with your system.

MS have FreeSync support and 2560x1440 options coming to the Xbox. £450 for an Xbox One X 2 controllers and 5 games. Pair that with a £250 75Hz 32" inch 2560x1440 FreeSync monitor and buying a gaming PC starts to look very silly. I mean I even got a 4k Bluray player...

I average over 100FPS on Destiny 2 and The Division on the Ultra preset.

I see what you're saying but those Xbox One X games will run a lower presets too.

I suppose it comes down to what you willing to pay for, a cost>performance ratio.

Thats a possibility. But gfx card manufacturers can risk buying more inventory once the next gen chips launch as it wont be as bad to be left with surplus stock if the bubble bursts at the beginning of a new chip generation.

Well that's it. What have you got tied up in your system £3.5K £4K?

So maybe 10x the cost of a console that will do a pretty decent impression of a gaming rig, pull 200 watt and is the size of a ITX build with a 4k bluray player.

Yeah, I do see your point.

But then a PC can be used for so much. When not gaming I tend to leave my PC on to Fold or do a bit of mining, neither of which a console can do.

Then there's video editing, photo shopping etc.

I realise these are irrelevant if your aim is just to game, but for my particular needs I could never revert back to using a console!

The current pricing is pretty crazy on GPUs, I blame mining and lack of competition. Memory is also expensive but I can see that dropping back at some point, we saw the same thing happen with DDR3, and DDR2 before that.
CPUs on the other hand are actually at a point again where decent competition has lead to advancements in terms of performance/£. Wish the same could be said for GPUs.

I can't believe that the liquid vega 64 I bought on launch day for £640 actually looks like I got a bargain 5 months down the line, every other time I bought a GPU on launch the prices have usually dropped by a fair bit 6 months after launch! Who in their right mind would actually pay £800 for a Vega64!

Now is defiantly not a time where PC gaming has been considered cheap, I've been building PCs for gaming for the better part of 16 years now, and it's always been somewhat cyclical, give it two years for production to catch up (or less if mining turns out to be a bust) and PC gaming will be looking like good value again (especially so as the consoles will be older as well).

From someone who started PC gaming in 94, when a half decent pc cost 3 grand in today's money and was completely out of date within 2 years, I still think it's a bit of a bargain these days!

Brought at Zotac 1080 Amp Extreme+ for £480 3 months ago and it’s now £580. The prices have gone up so much since I started looking in April.

I'm just running an rx480, have been since they were new. It's been running fine even for VR, gaming requirement have stayed mostly the same for years. Game developers aim for the middle of the market, as less people upgrade as often, old cards last longer for gaming on.

Switching to console isn't a money saver tbh. Not when the games are much more expensive and you need to pay a subscription to play many of them online. Also there's the very limited functionality, so you still need a PC for other things.

ive been saying this for a while. Back in the day you were pretty much forced to upgrade every 18 months or so. I know guys who are still rocking i7 2700ks and 290 graphics cards and are happy with what they have. Play most games at 1080p 60fps + and thats years old hardware.

Heck I only upgraded from my 4770k because I wanted to not because I felt I had to.

The high end market is smaller than most people think. There is more than enough compute power out there for most average joes which is another reason why pc sales are declining because who needs to upgrade their 5 year old laptop that they use for net browsing, word etc?
