GPU prices go boom

Just checked the 1080 Ti Strix OC and it used to be around £750 around August time from OCUK when I bought mine, It's now £929.99.

Strix OC with before 12 shipping which costs roughly £20 and a fan which cost £20, So roughly £750 for the actual card, That's a £180 price increase and there's still lots of stock.

I'd love to see OCUK's reason behind this outside of just "because people will pay it" as this is just pure greed, Not blaming OCUK as I know they are a business and not a charity but it's gone a little overboard now.

funny enough, a distributor has them on pre-order for £750 after TAX ... actually come down last time i looked, Palit £680

asked why havent they jacked up their prices for profit -"not allowed"

Think of it this way: more cards sold first hand means more profit for the card makers.

Look at Nvidia's earning reports and projected revenue, gaming cards up! Remember a few years back there was all that talk of PC gaming being dead?

What happens when consumers who can't get access to new cards stop buying games though? If the prices remain inflated for a while then Nvidia and AMD might be there for the tomorrow of PC gaming but if publishers don't stick around because they feel the audience isn't there then PC gaming is done, although with the production time for games we won't know for a few years. Obviously somewhat melodramatic but....

Erm... remind me what happens if all the GPUs are sold to miners from here on out?

That's good for PC gaming? I must be quite thick as I don't understand how it's good for PC gamers if they can't buy a GPU.

I've come to the conclusion that it's pointless trying to convince them. They are the type of people motivated purely by money, and don't really care if it affects the hobby of a large group of people.

Nothing will change until GPU mining isn't profitable.

If you're in the market for a new GPU for gaming, best bet is just to buy a console to enjoy your games on until Proof of Work crypto dies the death it so desperately deserves.

I pretty much have switched exclusively to console now, but unfortunately the genre of games I tend to play the most, are PC only (i.e. RTS, Turn based games, etc) so I just hope my GPU doesn't break otherwise I won't be playing any games at all on PC if that happens

waiting for someone to crack the system to allow mining to be done on them

wondering if we'll see increased police raids in houses mistaken for growing weed with high energy input and heat output hahaha

or if Police will start targeting houses drawing lots of power, checking to see if there's mining happening and give Capital Tax has been filed on profit ....

Yes it would not surprise me, police go after the miners while the big corporations pay hardly any tax.

Most hobby miners don't have their rigs in the attic.

And how exactly would they tell the difference between a house with a few mining rigs and a house with electric heating instead of gas? :p

Also police don't generally conduct random house raids just to see if the occupiers might be doing any tax evasion ^^

This is my main concern. I don't care that much that I can't really/don't want to buy a card at the moment even though I'd like to. I care about the effect on the pc gaming scene. As you say in a few years from now.

Part of the pc player base are being pushed towards consoles at the moment as a direct result of these prices.

heat rises and mining rigs put out a lot of heat! living in Llanelli for a stint and few friends in the force there. its quite common to see the police heli up 3 times a week flying over- scan the heat sig of houses - have quite a good success rate actually. but thats only one town and one force

as stated in a pic above, using £100 of electric a day on pure mining - If your able to point out to be a house using that amount for heating or anything else a day then fair enough, but that was a lot of 1080 Tis

so why i was stating would be funny to see if mix up occur - but again, depends on the forces practice

that is a problem. I simply won't upgrade my 970 until the prices are not stupid.
But if it lasts years and my pc is unable to play modern games then i might as well switch to console.

I don't think I asked what GPU you have...

Who says GPUs should only be used for gaming anyway. Should point out that I had not purchased a GPU for mining; just playing devils advocate. Not sure why you think people will be crying. They'll no doubt have broken even on the hardware within 60 days, have made a load of money, and selling the GPUs off cheap will make them more money. It'll be a win win for all.

I wouln't want to buy a second hand GPU beasted at 100% for mining.

So gaming is a hobby and mining is effectively the parasite that is eroding this hobby? But mining can't be a hobby for anybody because it isn't gaming? Never has the phrase "Don't hate the player, hate the game" been more relevant.

It wouldn't bother me one bit, most mining cards will be put under a lot less stress than a card that is used for regular gaming. I know for example that my vega gets hotter and draws much more power from the wall playing a game than it does mining. I still have cards that were abused and mined almost their entire life but still work flawlessly, for example, I have a 5850 that ran for probably a year or more with a broken fan at 90 to 100 degrees and still works flawlessly to this day, well apart from the broken fan obviously. So long as the card works I couldn't care what it was used for.

In a nutshell, yes.

But mining can't be a hobby for anybody because it isn't gaming? Never has the phrase "Don't hate the player, hate the game" been more relevant.

If you want to class mining as a hobby then go ahead. I don't really care what it's classed as in all honesty. At least gaming as a "hobby" doesn't erode or cause prices to increase on any other persons "hobby" out there.

Hopefully the bubble bursts soon.

No more mining suckers! :p
The bubble will burst but that doesn't mean mining goes away. Ideally for PC enthusiasts currencies like Bitcoin that be done on ASIC will live on and memory bound currencies like Ethereum which are impervious to ASIC will go the way of the dodo.
