GPU prices go boom

Current stock of RX Vega 64 are £950 and restricted to 1 per customer, so not aimed at miners. Obviously mining is creating the shortage that pushes prices up generally but you can't say that people who bought cards for nearly a grand before there was any shortage didn't add fuel to the fire.

When there is a limited stock of particular TV, do John Lewis increase the price of their limited stock by say 40%? No, whats so special about pc components that pc retailers find this acceptable behaviour?

This isn't limited stock of a particular TV, it's limited stock of all TVs over 24". This hasn't happened with TVs so no available comparison.

I have to say I'm conflicted, one side of me things just because you "can" sell something for an inflated price doesn't mean you "should". Unfortunately there doesn't seem to retailer that just isn't in for "a quick buck", pretty sad really.

The other side say it's just "supply and demand"

actually yes it has, there is always limited stock of philips tvs in argos for example and there prices go down not up. until stock is depleted.

To think mining might have basically killed the concept of 4k gaming at 60fps+ from being mainstream until near the next gen of consoles. Really sad.

It's not "killed" anything, made it more expensive perhaps, made it cost prohibitive for some people? Sure. Killed it? Nope... you can still buy a machine that does 60fps @ 4k so everything is as it was just more expensive.

I agree with this.

My first post in this thread was asking what the fuss was all about because when I looked at the time, the prices for a 1080ti were marginally higher. Now, we're talking almost a grand for a 1080ti. I can't see how that's justified purely on supply/demand economics.

Can anyone confirm if the price hike is at supplier or retail level? Surely it's the supply chain that's upped the price? If not, it's like a cartel is at work if retailers are all applying huge margins without any one attempting to undercut the competition?

I find it odd that people are now complaining about GPU prices !

Lets be honest, 500 + for a GPU was always plain daft as it. The miners just seem to have exaggerated it.

Never mind, Nvidia/AMD will be rubbing there hands as they have now seen the most think £700 ish is reasonable
