Used Car - Vectra VXR, Flame coat ready.

Thing about the boxer engines is they are pretty economical when cruising. It's town driving that kills the average mpg on them. Being naturally balanced they are smooth as well.

Even the STI isn't bad when you consider the performance. 28 is what I used to get from my mk2 Focus ST and that was no where near as quick as an STI.

I emptied my tank in 90miles just after i had it mapped for new turbo and that. Sensible driving will return 100+miles to 25ltrs, what ever mpg that is? Still quite impressive given their reputation.

Please don't buy one; they are horrible. There is absolutely no exclusivity in owning one of these unless you're in the community of people who wear 3/4 length combat trousers and sports vests to show off your tribal tattoos, and shout at your family regularly in Home Bargains.

Someone on here used to own one (MrLOL - changed his name I think).

For that sort of money and performance I'd buy a WRX, Focus ST, Mazda 6 (or 3) MPS, or as mentioned earlier, if an R36 is in budget go for that.

I've spoken to loads of people at work today about this and they're all saying not to do it. Though just to help me make a decision a friend of a friend owns one so he said he'd arrange for him to let me have a look/drive at it tomorrow. I guess I want to see it to make a proper decision.

Spoke to a couple of owners via the facebook group and they sing nothing but praises. Though this chain stretch business is quite common it seems. Though it is hit/miss.

Focus ST, I read something regarding engine liner issues, but it was a quick glimpse so I haven't looked into it further. Mazda 6mps I've ruled out a long with the 3. Have had family who've owned both and didn't really like them. Didn't keep them long either.

R36 again is out of budget.

If you like the golf, but consider it too expensive have you considered an Octavia VRS? They meet all of your requirements other than 250BHP but that's easily solved.

You could spend £6k on something like this; https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201712202182906

And then another £400 on this; http://www.sharkperformance.co.uk/s...-octavia-ii-fl-2009-2013-200bhp-stage-1-remap

That gets you up to bang on 250BHP with tons of torque within your budget, whilst basically putting you into a slightly less pretty golf GTI with a bigger boot.

The Octavia does seem to fit the bill. It's a hatch, has plenty of space which is a bonus and it looks rather smart, but to me it still has something missing. A stage 2 would take it 280 which is tempting. I have a few friends who use the TDI variants in Taxi's and they seem to like them. Not sure what the petrol will feel like, so I'll arrange to go look at a few.

Like some others have said, that's a lot of car for the money, very rare too. The sad thing is, it's a Saloon. I just can't do with a saloon anymore as it's not practical enough for me. I wish I could see past the practicality aspect of my requirements but at the moment I can't. Otherwise I'd be all over that as it seems to be a cracking buy.

I could get lucky and find one in an estate all be it (Turbo X variant). There always used to be a couple for sales some years ago but they seem to be getting rare.

The reality of this thread is, that I am very picky in what I want now. I also appreciate everyone helping me and linking cars.

Going to see what else fits the bill, but there doesn't seem to be a lot unless I go small hatch (Golf/A3/Leon) and raise the budget, which I don't necessarily want to do as I'd like to have a spare pot if things do go wrong in the ownership.

Approaching the Octavia vrs with any expectation of a driving experience away from being a brisk motorway accelerating car (once mapped) is going to leave you really disappointed. Having said that compared to any of the Saab's mentioned or the vectra there likely won't be a huge amount in it.

I also wouldn't wish another early tsi engined one on my worst enemy - but then I'm also pretty sure I had a complete Friday car that had all sorts of silly gremlins appear after the engine was swapped over.

I wouldn't buy a £7k focus ST as a few k more puts you into a much more modern version of the same car. Any of the Saab's you need to be spending much less than the budget on imo.

When I started looking to change the Octavia I initially set a budget around the same as yours - I then quickly realised that to get anything that suited me I actually wanted to either spend a good bit more and get a fresher car (in terms of age and design) or spend a good bit less and accept that I might need to get my hands dirty a bit more.

You're in that horrible middle ground where the money (which I'd consider a fair amount to be chucking into a car) buys you a relatively old car if you're looking for something quick whilst you can spend 2-3k less and not really lose much in terms of the age of car.

I've only ever been in a vectra vxr once years ago - I can only remember thinking it was quick, but frankly horrible

S3: boring
S4: boring
335i/D: estate potentially cripple you but good family motor and quick
Focus ST: good motor and affordable
XJ XJR: will cripple you but santapod
Lancer Ralliart: boring but good quickish family car
RS Megane: (newer shape) what i would pick if i was you and 5 doors wasn't necessary
WRX: wishin you just got a sti
STI Spec D: another good choice and seem to be cheaper than the rest, prob have to have @L0rdMike on speed dial
GTI: Boring

My opinion of course.

yeah he had both and the astra but not a vectra (forgot this thread was about a vectra). could have been the taxi driver with the vectra, Foxtrot or 233.

It was MrLOL now known as froddors or something. He mapped it and then the clutch went and some other stuff too.

Re the Facebook group is that a vectra /vxr owners club? If so not to **** on your parade but of course they will sing it's praises even if it's a crap car

Saab 9-3 was the worst car I've ever owned, even with a bigger turbo and 250bhp and the roof down on a sunny day. It's probably put me off GM for life.

talk of insignias a friend of a friend bought a 2010 diesel on finance, he is paying £250 a month for 5 years.:eek::eek::eek:
