GPU prices go boom

I am happy to be proved wrong. You are the one that made the statement. Back it up.

I'd rather pass, thanks very much. I've seen your counter arguments to perfectly rational and valid points made.

I don't get this argument. IF you really want to save the environment stop using social media(Twitter, facebook) online forums, online game saves, photo sharing sites, youtube etc. Because data centres use way more electricity than mining. Facebook alone uses more power than a country.

This is the argument a 3 year old would put forward. You're seriously trying to tell @Kaapstad that mining his card 24/7 is less damaging to the environment than checking his Facebook? :D

Sorry, but I can't take you seriously.

The problem with something like Bitcoin is that it's poorly designed management system deliberately wastes processing cycles to limit the number of bitcoins. It is in effect deliberately wasting energy. When you consider that this now amounts to nearly 30 Tera Watts hours per year, then things are getting serious. Apparently a single Bitcoin trade now consumes enough electricity to power a home for a month. I mean it's a simply insane process to implement when you consider that we are already wrecking the planet, but there you go, it has been implemented. It's also estimated that 80% of mining happens in China, so you are talking largely coal being used to generate the electricity.

Which Figures are you using? The ones by Alex DeVries on Digiconomist? Those ones have been doing the rounds on all the clickbait sites. Read this,

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/21/no-...to-consume-all-the-worlds-energy-in-2020.html

It's an interesting read.

I don't game online.

Using any of the other things you mentioned above for me would consume maybe 1 or 2 watts per day as the computing power needed is tiny. This obviously does not include the amount my PC is using.

If I used all my GPUs for mining and I have over 50, I would be consuming roughly 50 x 250 Watts = 12500 Watts and this does not include the CPUs needed to drive the cards.

No contest is it.

13 GPU rigs here, each ones total system pull is 1200watts from the wall.

Only a mad man would be running at 250watts a card.

I knew you would answer like that. Show me the proof, I have no problem admitting I am wrong. If, as you say, Criminals are the main driving force behind bitcoin, then you should have no trouble proving it. But, we both know that's not the case. Are criminals using bitcoin? Sure they are, just like they have used every other form of currency ever.

And your reply is just as bad. My point is that people are quick to point out the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining while ignoring the massive amounts of wasteful stuff that they do already. Facebook is just an example. Facebook's servers use more electricity than a small country.

Many of us on these forums, for example, have multiple computers, consoles, tablets, large screen TV's, as well as monitors and sound systems, the list could go on. It's a lot of stuff, using a lot of electricity and a lot of it used to connect to data centres for stuff that we really could do without but that's been done to save us a little time and effort. And then we go out and drive in our cars. But, this is where we draw the line? Mining on cards.

I suppose, maybe that's a good thing, gotta start somewhere.

People just hate mining and only because it's affecting their favourite hobby. I wonder how many people would be complaining about the environmental impact on this forum if there were separate cards for mining and gaming and one didn't affect the other?

Sorry Kaap, my post wasn't really directed at you, it was more directed at us as a species and where we draw the line with what's good and bad for our Planet.

And you wouldn't be using 50 GPUs, only the Volta, Pascal, Polaris and Vega GPUs would be profitable for mining. And you wouldn't be using 250 watts power on each of them, you would be undervolting them and lowering the power limit.

You guys forgetting one thing. OCUK is Not a standalobe company anymore. I assume price increse came from central.

Many here forget that Gibbo made sone FANRASTIC offers for gamers/forum users so they could gave gotten cards at RRP. 480s anyobe?? 580s anyone?? Vega 64??

Everyone seems to forget about good deals for US all they see. Oooo fucling greedy OCUK got prices up blablabla.

I bet You that if @Gibbo would put up a deal for gamers witr RRP discount on this very forums/topic like 1card per person. Half would get one abd sold with proffit ******* sure of it!!!

And to not be cynical id probobly do it myself. 200 wuid profit in matter of few days?? Thats Maximum i can save up from my full time job wage after I pay my rent and bills!!!

^^^^ Yeah some good points made their. I guess many of us don't really know where to direct our frustrations.

It is what it is and people will get what they get, we live in a capitalist driven world that promotes and encourages greed.

Eighty two percent of the wealth generated last year went to the richest 1% of the global population, while the 3.7 billion people who make up the poorest half of the world saw no increase in their wealth, according to a new Oxfam report released today.

Billionaire wealth has risen by an annual average of 13% since 2010 – six times faster than the wages of ordinary workers, which have risen by a yearly average of just 2%. The number of billionaires rose at a rate of one every two days between March 2016 and March 2017.

This huge increase could have ended global extreme poverty seven times over.

The Oxfam report states that it takes just four days for a CEO from one of the top five global fashion brands to earn what a Bangladeshi garment worker will earn in her lifetime. In the US, it takes slightly over one working day for a CEO to earn what an ordinary worker makes in a year.

Off topic maybe but quite a bit more important than miners or gpu's perhaps.

Were all poor mate relatively speaking just different shades of poor hence why people play the lottery or involve themselves in such things as mining. Only a very small percentage of the Worlds population are actually getting rich the rest of us, if we're lucky, are nothing more than CONSUMERS, little more than worker ants slaving away to satisfy the queen.

Rather dim view I suppose but you can't argue with the facts and the facts at the Economic Forum in 2015 were " 85 of the wealthiest individuals on the planet have more wealth than the poorest 50% of the total population of the planet". But hey you can always mine yourself above the 50% :p

I think it was exactly what Akala meant when he wrote the lyrics.
Keep em dumb and distracted and unhealthy
Perfect recipe for keeping themselves wealthy
Em' being us the average man on the street and them being the 85 or more wealthiest.

hahaha governments will never lose control of currency markets to some 2-bit cryptocurrency, do you know how much currency markets are worth? I'm guessing a lot more than all the crypto currency put together.
as said it is a huge criminal con job. telling yourself otherwise doesn't change that

Its not a huge criminal con job and tell yourself otherwise doesn't change that

See what I did there..

Show us proof that it IS!

So that's about the same power draw as the i9-7980XE when running a mild overclock. :p

This is most stupid logic I've seen yet... datacenters use electricity while providing a service to millions of users per day.

You stupid coin miners just serve yourself though not without future consequence.

The above could be said to be true too.

Retailers have backed themselves in to corner due to the current circumstances - graphic cards are becoming unprofitable to miners with +12 months ROI and too expensive for most gamers. Going to be a lot of unsold stock at this rate.
