Bars and fast food restaurants all around me are ditching full fat soft drinks left right and centre in favour of sugar free alternatives, but aren't telling you until you've already paid.

I can't stand the taste of sugar free stuff, so I don't buy it for a reason.

Subway was the most recent for me.

Has anyone else experienced a similar 'issue'?

I didn't know about this. But it is a good move imo..... sucks for you obviously but sugary drinks are terrible.

I only ever have them very occasionally as a treat.

If you ask for a Coke and they give you a Diet Coke then ask for a refund.

Now, if you ask and they say "sorry sir, we only have Diet..." then that's different. I prefer Pepsi Max and rarely have full-fat sodas because I'd rather not 200 calories in a drink :p

Ask them what version they stock prior to ordering? I currently do the opposite when I ask for the sugar free version usually.

I would do usually, but it's been happening at my 'regulars' (including pubs). So I'm used to having full fat. One pub I went to changed my drink twice, after taking it back and explaining it tasted strange, before they admitted to not stocking full fat anymore.

I'm not a fizzy drinker really, only when I have a meal.

Today at Subway, they wouldn't swap the dispensed drink for a bottle, or even give me a water to have. I didn't end up drinking anything, but I'd blinking paid £1.30 for it.

I was at the dispensing machine when I asked if they no longer did full fat, and he said "Oh yeah we don't because they're not healthy". I did ask for a refund but he said he couldn't. I think had it not have been a cold Sunday, I'd have argued with him, but I just wanted to get home.

It's all bs. Why should I pay more or have my options restricted just because fatties with no willpower are becoming more common?
Because there's plenty of research showing it isn't just the fatties, they are at a higher risk. But just being thin does not protect you. Should be extended to food. The amount of sugar in food where there's no reason for it is criminal.

Tax makes it so you can still buy it.
I haven't seen a single place that has done what the op says. I mean subway had normal coke in there yesterday.

I don't have a problem with making people pay extra for sugary drinks. I think it's good. The problem I have is not telling the customer until after they've paid, and then not refunding.

I hated diet coke until i had a Gf that drank it and not the normal. After a while my taste buds change to not dislike it and it ruined normal as tasted so thick and sugary with an instant feeling of fur on my teeth.
Similar with green and blue milk. I still love blue but drink one or the other more will make one taste like water and the other cream.

I have always felt that there should be a level of taxation on sugar that would be sufficient to stop it from being the cheapest ingredient in manufactured food products.

At the moment, Manufacturers can load products with sugar in order to avoid having to use something more expensive...

Don't drink much Coke any more, but when I did I wasn't a fan of the taste of Zero or Diet. The Zero now is a lot better.

Be careful! Bought a Pepsi Max other week, got a horrible shock when I tasted it.

Ginger? Who the hell would make such an abomination!? On one I bought, the "Ginger" part was nowhere near as visible... :(

Nice with dark spiced rum, large measure of rum, small measure of pepsi.

I prefer Pepsi Max to full fat Pepsi or Coke anyway.

Lilt Zero is absolutely fine too, as with Sprite lemonade, then for my gin - diet Schweppes.

If I want something sugary, then I'll have milkshake or hot chocolate :-)

Sainsburys have replaced the full-fat version of Fever Tree Ginger Beer on their shelves with the 'Light' version. It tastes wrong. Luckily Fentimans is far superior.
