What watch do you wear?

Hi,

I want to buy a nice watch fro my dad's 60th bday.
He likes gold / gold colored watches and he currently doesn't have one.

Can anyone recommend something?

Budget is around £300.

Thanks

I wouldnt both honestly. Watches are a very personal thing and just because you like it wont mean your dad does. Just my .02. I wouldnt want to receive a watch I didnt like, then be obligated to wear it, and couldnt sell it in fear of annoying the person who gave it to me.

I got him a watch 5 years ago which he loves. I know what he likes and what he doesn't. The problem is the gold part... not many watches coming out in gold or gold plated.

get the diamonds checked, if they are real it is quite likely it's a real one and probably worth a fair bit.

So many fakes are amazing quality these days, short of checking the documentation it came with and checking with Rolex I'd imagine it would be hard to tell over t'internet

In the past one of the easiest ways to spot real ones from the movement. A Rolex second hand should be smooth as silk and not making a ticking noise.

Like Tone says though, that may have changed more recently with the quality of fakes these days.

EDIT: Quick google suggests I'm wrong - Rolex also make ones that tick! :D

Genuinely interested so did a little googling. Seems like if it's real everything should be more than millimeter perfect. However, given the suggest age of the watch it's hard to know what's wear and tear vs starting like that.

For example, the 6 o'clock marker is squint, and the text on the watch face isn't perfect. Is that because it's a fake or because it's old? No idea :)

Fake I’m afraid. No Rolex comes with a display back - although aftermarket ones are available they wouldn’t say “Deville” on them because that’s an Omega not a Rolex. Plus that’s a low cost clone movement in there. Dial and hands are very fake as is everything else I’m afraid.

The “tick or sweep” thing doesn’t really apply any more as the quartz copies are normally of such horrendous quality that you can tell straight away it’s fake even if the hands aren’t moving. By the same token there are some unbelievably high quality fakes out there these days that “sweep” exactly like a real one does and look and feel the part too. Even a lot of the low cost fakes do too but will show other signs that they’re not genuine.

Let's also not forget the common misconception that all watches made by Rolex have a sweeping hand - Oysterquartz are quite lovely things!

Is it just me of does the text on the inside of the watch look like it is missing/faded in areas. I wouldn't expect this with a luxury brand to have such imperfections.

You could try this website and enter the serial number to see if it is genuine.

If it is genuine you should have also got a certificate with it in the box (I think Rolex still do this - although have never owned one)

Very true. Lovely things they are, they are quite different in appearance to the mechanical ones though so should be easy to spot.

The display back isn’t as much of a tell as the movement behind it.. as pointed out, a few Rolex owners will switch to an aftermarket display back.

Certificates can be faked much more easily than the watch itself. It could also be a marriage, so genuine cert. fake watch, and vice versa as watches with all the bits and pieces sell for more than just the watch alone.

It is possible for text to go a bit off over time on older pieces as the dial material degrades, and this can sometimes add to the value due to it showing the originality of the piece and lack of restoration. But it is only possible on certain models made within a certain time frame due to the materials used.
