Gumtree rant

The fact you agreed £100 then he turns up bartering would have annoyed me already, I don't think I'd be in the mood for a return and/or corresponding with him further after I told him he broke it. The goods were his the instant you accepted the money and he took it off your premises.

I'm in full agreement with you here. I wasn't happy when after looking the machine over in my home he then started bartering. It was well looked after and looked great and worked great 3 days ago.

He's already got £20 refund as far as I'm concerned and needs to take responsibility that he should never have attempted to take it in the snow.

When it left my possession into his it was fully working I'm 100% confident of this.

I would take it back, refund, dry it out, get it working then sell for £100

What if it doesn't work? Then because of his stupidity I'm down £100 plus all my time/effort and now I have a broken machine I need to get rid of.

I don't want it back especially now that it's broken.

Had it been dry and he took it into the vehicle then messaged me saying that it didn't work then I would take it back for a full refund but that isn't the case.

If I bought a TV from you, dragged it through 2 feet of snow for 30 metres then complained it didn't work would you do the same?

I'm going to cut off contact. If he keeps messaging I'll make a report to the police of harassment. If he turns up I'll make a note of car registration. That way I'm covered.

I would want to do the same, but it's easy for me to sit behind my keyboard saying that. I totally appreciate your point regarding he knows where you live, car parked outside, potential damage, etc. If you have pets, kids, your mind wanders, I've been in a similar position myself in the past. Do what you think is best, it's easy for people to be like lol no refund when it's not them. I fully agree with your principal however.

hmm
If he brings it back it is likely that it is damaged for good unless you want to spend money repairing it
In future take note of car regs when you sell someone something.... just incase

It might just be handier to bend over and take it in this case, less trouble for you

I'm not sure what the point of this post is to be honest, you know your options you know the downsides of both, only you can decide if you can be bothered with the potential hassle should you tell him to go forth or the feeling of being screwed out of £80.

This is why I just skip everything or when the new washing machine comes just take the old one away, I can't be bothered with all the hastle of selling my old gear for a couple of greedy quid, yesterday I just binned a £700 worth of dj furniture that was cluttering up my house.

rookie mistakes

clues

1. Him being a chav trying to bargain down on an already agreed price
2. Him and his bud rolling the washing machine in the snow hahah
3. Him expecting a refund.

I would have chucked him out at his first attempt at haggling. But prior to that i would have said numerous times....so price is XXXX ok? So he is clear on price. I would have at least have video (on the day including timestamp bread newspaper etc :D ) of the washing machine working before unplugging hoses and stuff so you know 100% works fine. I also would have taken pics at him rolling the machine in the snow. (evidence and lols).

Shame you dont have cctv or even a dashcam you can setup though in case he puts on his big boy pants.

It's snow joke :p

Classic case of people not taking responsibility for their own actions and blaming everyone else for their mistakes.

I'd be inclined to stick to your guns and say "sorry, it's not my responsibility once you pick the washing machine up and take it outside my house". Who knows how it will pan out afterwards?

I always sell old appliances on gumtree and have never had a problem apart from people not turning up at the agreed time.

Sold as seen m8.

i think in future i will state this both in the advert and in person. sold as seen. as soon as you pay for it, it's yours and i no longer want anything to do with it. i'll cite this experience as to why. may have to stick a no haggling on doorstep policy too in future adverts as like i say this is the second time it's happened.

...Him and his bud rolling the washing machine in the snow hahah...

i was quite concerned at points they were falling over the place at one point a mere foot away from the wife's new lexus.

that's why it's a rant thread rather than advice thread. or what would you do thread. but there has been quite a lot of good advice given which is welcomed. the guy who skips everything including 800 quids worth of dj equipment was worth a laugh. i mean why not give to a charity shop so someone else can enjoy it and the money goes to a good cause? no he'd rather it be put to landfill. crazy???

So, potentially being hard up is enough to make him a chav?
Guess what that makes you for assuming so?

@ OP I can understand your obvious desire not to wake up one morning to find all your tyres slashed or dealing with potential other physical confrontations so maybe in your circumstance just refund and be done with

Its ocuk so i assume everything :p (its far more entertaining that way)

Nice bit of advice telling OP to just roll over though. I would only accept it back subject to a rather large "restocking" fee. Haggle OP haggle like the wind! Just make sure to have at least one mobile video on rec.

I honestly can't believe they haggled on the doorstep. I probably would have done the same as you, but the cheek of it is incredible. I might think differently next time.

Only issue I can see with giving a partial refund is having the machine dumped on your doorstep.

Err i have offered loads of free gear in the past to folk, guess what they want me to drop it off because they are too lazy to even pick it up, it's free but still i have to go out my way to transport err nope.

Of all the things i've sold on Gumtree everyone has asked for a discount, whats your lowest you would take, would you take this etc it's expected. It's why i always price stuff higher to compensate.OP did you use the shipping bolts ? Don't think you answered.
I think that is where the damage lies especially if they put the machine on it's back to transport or clean out any snow.
