Annihilation (2018) - Trailer

Good special effects, but the ending was underwhelming for me.

I found the individual characters and much of dialog quite boring and if I'm honest I did skip large potions of it as I don't think it added anything to the movie.

The special effects in some areas were outstanding, however other scenes and also the music at times didn't really fit imo.

You skipped portions? As in, actively fast forwarded?

So bizzare... I don't know how you can give an opinion if you made a conscious effort to avoid specific parts of the storytelling :/
Kinda proves my theory that a lot of films released on Netflix are going to get a slating because a lot of people will watch at home with their phone in hand, scrolling through FB and Twitter, or making a cup of tea, putting the washing on etc, and generally just getting distracted. If a film is in any way more complex than simply "smashy bang bang explosionz lol" then you're going to miss the important bits, the subtle bits, you won't get sucked in.. all because of those distractions.

Fast forwarding a film then complaining about it though. Oh dear...

Tell me about it, it's very rare things stay in my mind from films but that thing..... yea just something about the noise it was making and the look of it and the human like eyes...... chills even now lol

That whole bit was amazing, I liked the film as a whole but can understand the negative reviews

Indeed. Though, to play devils advocate for a moment, I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with viewing some films as pure, unadulterated entertainment.

A lot of people have this 'either or' mentality about the viewing experience, but we can have it both ways. We just need to level it out a bit in favour of... eughhh, 'films as art', which for all it's pretence is a statement that's certainly lost traction in the past few decades, as every artistic medium has gained more disposable attributes and people have become more passive as consumers.

And things like Netflix are great! The big streaming networks have offered work to some people who'd NEVER get a look in anymore, given what they've made or done in the Hollywood scene which has left them blacklisted by some of the major studios. BUT, with that comes your point. It encourages a channel flicking mentality with movies, which is very sad.

Doubt I missed much, it was just boring backstory for the meat shields, it's like getting a back story for a red shirt, why waste your time? They'll be dead soon, the film confirmed as much before they even left. ;)

Yeah not at all anything wrong with that. But take A Ghost Story for example. I watched that in a small cinema and was completely captivated by the pie-eating scene. I'd bet good money that will go over a lot of people's heads (probably myself included) if that was at home with all manner of distractions only a stretch away.

I quite liked this film.

That pie eating scene went on forever though :p

I did get what the director was trying to get across with it though.

If you make your mind up a film is going to be crap before you watch it, it usually is.

I try not to read too many reviews before I watch anything, everybody looks for different things when deciding whether a film was/is good or not.

I watched some of the trailer (not all of it as they give too much away these days, I find) and thought it looked good.

Didn't find any of the dialog unnecessary that I can remember, the acting was decent, the special effects were good - I like how they subtly put the 'shimmer' all the way through it, looked like oil on everything).

I wasn't overly impressed with the ending as it felt a little rushed compared to the rest of the film, which is pretty much my only criticism, oh and I'd have liked to have seen more in the way of 'mutations'.

Find it strange some people didn’t enjoy the ending, for me the last 20 minutes are what made the film so memorable and unique. Everyone I know has gone mental over the ending as well, first time I’ve seen anything negative said about it is in this thread.

I’ve watched it through twice now and the amount of detail/depth to the film is crazy, so many little hints and Easter eggs along the way and I’m sure I’ll come across many more with repeated viewing.

This is the type of film I want to see from the movie industry and it depresses the hell out of me that the average cinema viewer is deemed to be too dumb to understand or appreciate an ending like this... I would say the studios need to have more faith in their audience but sadly I fear they know their audiences better than we do. Props to Garland for refusing to dumb down the ending at the request of paramount, especially as it ended up costing the film millions in potential box office revenue. It’s nice to see someone value art over money.

I enjoyed the film. My only criticism was that the ending wasn't as well done as I thought the rest of the film was, but interesting nonetheless.

Watched this tonight, loved it. Like others, I didn't find the ending as good as the rest of the film, but that is more a compliment to the rest of the film than anything.

I think Garland is slowly getting the appreciation he deserves, he's been around for ages, he wrote The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine...the latter also has a pretty divisive ending much like Annihilation.

Sadly we're in the ADHD age of superheroes where folks want wisecracks, splosions, pretty costumes and everything neatly wrapped up.

Along with Villeneuve, I immediately get excited when I see Garlands name on something.

It's definitely one of the better films I have seen recently.

I love to see something a bit different, some creativity in film making.

So much cookie cutter dross around these days :(

Will be watching this during the weekend. Does it cover all the books?

I haven't read the books, but from what I read online, it covers a lot of the first one, however it isn't completely faithful to it and there are some large differences in places. Another thing I read was that it manages to be more self contained than the book, making more sense in isolation than the first book does.
