This would be true if it was the customer paying for it. When it's the dealer/warranty company having to pay for its "Sorry sir, I know your brand new car is using a litre of oil every 100 miles, but we consider this normal"
From what I've read the main problem is a lot of them simply can't be asked to go through the claim process and their warranty labour rates are lower than they normally charge. So unless they really have no work warranty work is not something they want .
Can anyone advise me here, I had my 520d serviced today and it required an oil, oil filter and microfilter service. It's £220 on the BMW website and they confirmed it on the phone when I booked, however when I went to pay they tried to charge about £270 saying I had to pay for the "standard scope" service too.
I'm a little bit miffed at what this extra "service" is and they didn't do a great job explaining it to me.

Standard Scope is only 12 minutes labour and covers preparing the workshop, tools, driving the car in to the workshop, driving car out etc.
It exists as the service times for individual items are exclusive of this allowance, as each service item triggers independently. For example, if the Vehicle Check was 1 hour labour, Oil Service 18 minutes labour, then do them both together, plus Standard Scope, and it’s 1hr 30. If Standard Scope didn’t exist, then Vehicle Check would be 1hr 12 labour and Oil Servide 30 minutes labour. Do them together, and BMW would need to record a specific labour time. Standard Scope is a way of simplifying the labour times and being more transparent to the customer.

The website automatically adds Standard Scope to quotes so I don’t see how that has happened.
The sales guy (the one who said the electric rack had PAS fluid in) said "we want warranty work so we would fix it if there was anything wrong". Not that I believed a word he said.
Also at the end of my dashcam footage after they say that they can feel it through the floor one of the guys says something along the lines of 'test schedule' it or 'tech schedule it' anyone got any ideas what that involves? As nothing else was done on the car afterwards.

Yeah the spec list surprised me, had to double check I wasn’t looking at the advert for something that wasn’t a 1 series
They’re just a bit naff and old, screws have rusted and they’ve got horrible borders. A nice fresh set of plates always lifts a car up imo
Thanks! Exactly, just need to convince the Mrs that she prefers being driven round in a Porsche to an S-Max with 2 screaming little bundles of joy in the back...
The website wouldn't actually let me book the service so it was booked via telephone and a price of £220 was agreed inclusive of everything. When I picked the car up and went to pay the price had gone up as I was told that £220 didn't include the standard scope service.
In the end they waived the labour costs entirely and only charged me for parts. I'm not complaining, the service was very good I just wouldn't mind knowing for my next service.
As I understand it, Connected drive is free for the first three years of a cars life, is this transferable? - my partner has just got a 2 yr old AUC f20 118d Sport and on registering the app I’m told after entering the vin there’s no subscription in place for the vehicle and directs me to purchase one, fairly sure the salesbod said it had the subscription (but was probably talking rubbish as they do!)

It's free for the first 3 years when included with professional navigation. Otherwise you had to purchase connected drive services when new to get it for 3 years.
Does the vehicle have professional navigation? I think it even got unbundled from that on a 1 series at some point too.

The best part about this is the fact I'll (nearly) be able to keep up with you on car runs now.
Managed to get a G30 530d SE courtesy car for a few days while my F10 535d was in getting some problems with the service indicators sorted.
Absolutely lovely car - everything seemed ever so slightly more refined and improved than the F10. Wasn’t any one thing I could put my finger on, just lots of little things that made it a nicer car overall. Just a couple of things that I found slightly annoying - don’t like that they’ve taken the center vent air mixture control away (although its in the iDrive menu it’s annoying to get to), and also not a fan of the new wiper stalk arrangement. Much preferred pushing a button to switch the auto-wipers on and being able to manually override it without disabling the auto setting. Now the same sort of stalk arrangement as Ford/VW etc all seem to have with the auto-wiper being a wiper position.
Minior annoyances in an otherwise great car! Very tempted by a G30 (shame there’s no 40d in the UK), although I am quite partial to the G32 6GT as well (yes its got marmite looks - I just happen to like them!).

This almost sounds like something they were sat around and thinking how can we make up some charge to fleece the customer and make it confusing.
Then the work experience kid just said standard scope and they all went with it.
It’s got Professional Navigation, yes, we rang BMW (rather than the dealer) yesterday and they said the connected drive had expired as it was registered in 2015 (28/11/15) and “its now 2018 which is 3 years” which we both thought a bit of a poor attitude, I confirmed that the accident assistant would carry on working to which they replied it’s for the life of the car and she’s happy with that and they also said the previous owner had paid for map updates which last until November 2018.
Having looked through the connected drive page I can’t see much that’s worth the £240 they are asking for, certainty nothing she’ll use I’d say, my sisters M4 and 1 series both have it and when I asked her if she uses it much she didn’t even know it had it! - we probably won’t bother.
I prefer the auto wiper on the stalk as you can just just leave it in the up position and forget about it. Previously you had to manually press the button every time you restarted the car.
You can also save iDrive menu's to the 1-7 buttons to get to them quickly.

Surely the button option is better as it defaults to off. What if the wipers are stuck with snow or ice.
My partners f20 118d has auto wipers but you have to press a button on the stalk to activate them which kind of defeats the point of auto wipers, when on they seem have a mind of their own in slow traffic, seem to like to periodically go very fast in light drizzle in such scenarios but they were very good on the motorway run down to Taunton last Thursday night they seemed very intuitive at motorway speeds.
