Rome: how long?

Going there in September. Never been, dunno how many days to do. Thinking of four, whatcha think?

And also looking for other tips and advice on stuff to do / places to / eat / stay etc.

I'm a blank canvas. Paint me with your knowledge and imagination.

Seen it the other day and he uselful info on it, were getting married near there in October so was a good helpful read, not all the info your after but will still help

Cheers, will have a look. Funny you should say you're getting married, we're going for our 10th anniversary.

Raymond thanks too. I suspect 4 days will be perfect.
 
I could probably do a week there but perhaps not everyone could. Four days will see you have a nice relaxed pace around all the main sites.

We’re getting married in sorrento but we’re foing to have a day trip to Rome and also a night in Capri, looks nice there to
 
You could do the must sees in 3 nights IMO without feeling rushed. One morning at Ancient Rome, one morning at the Vatican... the rest is ROME-ing around.

I actually did 4 nights and a day trip to Florence (to see the highlights) and I didn’t feel particularly rushed in either location.

There is quite a lot of walking in Rome so wear comfy shoes and I’d suggest grabbing the metro when going back to your hotel, if convenient.

Personally I think the Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps are complete rubbish or at the very least extraordinarily overhyped as tourist attractions so if you need to skip anything, skip those.
 
We went Monday - Friday. Managed to visit all the 'main' attractions, then spent a day in Ostia Antica which was pretty incredible.

I went to Rome of a cruise recently and because we have done Rome before decided to take a trip here. Very interesting and would definitely recommended it to people, doesn't seem to be as busy as the centre either.
 
Was there a couple of days ago and loved the atmosphere and architecture, did loads of walking and did all the tourist stuff, you're going to love it I'm sure.
 
My girlfriend and I went for a week 2 years back, walked 72 miles over that week (wear good shoes!) and saw everything we wanted to see. Any longer than a week and we would have been running out of things to do in Rome.

Make sure you do a bit of research for food, most of it is tourist crap and not 'proper' Italian food. A short walk to the outskirts and you'll be in more local Italian areas and you'll get some fantastic traditional food there.

It's a great place :)

It's also mega expensive there. It's basically one big tourist trap now where the local businesses love to rip off the tourists.


Back on topic, we did 3 nights i think in Rome, @Diddums if you do plan to visit the Vatican, then book your tickets online so you can skip the entry queue.

I enjoyed the Colosseum too, but we got there as soon as it opened, so didn't have to queue much.
