Whatsapp group chat - SJW's strike again

Employees are paid for their time and knowledge at the work place. Students pay to be at university. They are the customer.

Within the next 30 to 50 years I expect universities to disappear as they simply aren't fit for purpose anymore.
Not really no. Why don't you go look at any university and there code of conduct, it is very much similar to being employee. Only they don't care if you turn up or not.

Someone like Frankie Boyle manages to be edgy and funny without being racist...

He may have won his case in court a few years back but I'm not sure he would not get kicked out out of Exeter uni for makimg a joke about the ministry of defence saying that previously the could have been referred to as ....

The ministry of ** bombing

**insert word some people apparently aren't supposed to use which can be used as an offensive term for some people 'of colour' **

And yes I know that Boyle is himself Scottish.... but this is still a racist comment ....

Nobody thought Mel Gibson could play a Scot but look at him now! Alcoholic and a racist!

Lol at the unknowing hypocrisy in insisting, "Their comments should be protected by freedom of speech. That grass shouldn't be free to speak about them."

I dont think thats the issue for most people.

He is entitled to do what he likes as far as freedom of speech goes, but his actions still make him a douche.

we do not have freedom of speech in this country.

We haven't had this in a long time so i'm not sure why people now are calling the death of it recently. Also, unless I'm mistaken, even in the US freedom of speech protects from the government arresting you for saying something, but not a private institution for sacking you after saying something.

This is true and freedom of speech needs to be limited in certain situations.

For example if these guys were standing on a soap box and preaching this sort of crude material from their mouths to the public as a whole then it needs to be restricted.

In a whatsapp group though between friends? For me (and on the brief information that I have access to) this is just immature banter with a dose of naivety with no intent.

The consequence? Was it a fit for the crime? Absolutely no. But then again any allegation of racism these days and companies and institutions in the public eye seem to crack a walnut with a sledgehammer (without any unbiased investigation)to disassociate themselves from it as far as possible.

Racism Allegations = The trump card that doesn't allow any reasoned discussion.

It's worth noting who the butt of that joke is, and to whom the racial slur is attributed in the structure.

It's not really comparable to what you're comparing it with.

Just so you know, you absolutely do not support freedom of speech, there's no caveats to free speech. You should be very clear on your own position, you are against free speech. Period.

Please don't say free speech should be limited, when you really mean speech should be limited. Also don't complain when a government abuses that power to restrict what can and can't be said about them or their policies because it's now hate speech, or another arbitrarily decided term used to impose fascism.

Racist is racist, whether behind closed doors or not.
They're joking though. From what ive seen half of what they're saying are movie quotes from a comedy about Muslim terrorists. It might not be funny but it's not like they are out in the streets protesting for slavery to be legal again. It's just some crap Jokes between friends that someone has thrown out their to make them look bad.

Im sure everyone's made a bad taste joke at some point in their life. It doesn't mean that's what you believe though. I imagine the guy who's shared this is going to have a very lonely time at uni. Who wants to hang around with someone like that who will grass up friends and try to ruin their futures over a bad taste joke.

Maybe he reported them as a joke ?

Quoting a film that you and your mates found funny in private should now lead to you losing your job/having your right to education removed? Backwards.

I believe the police might consider it hate speech actually and we do not have freedom of speech in this country.

I think you'd have a very hard time proving a) or b) in this situation

A person who uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, is guilty of an offence if—
(a) he intends thereby to stir up racial hatred, or
(b) having regard to all the circumstances racial hatred is likely to be stirred up thereby.
