Ramadan 2018

He's got an awesome library too. Almost 100Km of shelves. No typo - the place is a massive underground vault system. Depending on who you believe, it contains supersecret world-changing stuff or a lot of paperwork from centuries of a rather large and rather bureaucratic organisation, interesting to scholars but only to scholars. I'd like it to be the former, but I think it's far more likely to be the latter.

MAYYYBEEEEE all the books are books recovered from the library of Alexandria before Caesar burnt it down and contains the secrets of the ancient world....

My friend is a Muslim and I watched him do this last year, ridiculous thing to do really, I didn't even realise they did the fasting without water. He could barely speak by the end of the day. I don't support it at all.

Me neither. What kind of religion expects someone to punish and possibly harm themselves physically for it. Not a very compassionate religion.

What do Muslim footballers Like Mesut Ozil do? There's no way they can fast in the month building up to the world cup.

The fast is only form sunrise to sunset. As soon as the sun goes down they eat a big meal, same before the sunrise. From a nutritional point of view there is not a huge difference, you can eat just as many calories, just no snacking in the day.
The lack of water during the day is a bigger issue. For the average person with an office job there is no issue, make sure they are well hydrated before sunrise and you wont need anything. When doing sports, dehydration will occur but dehydration is not actually such a big deal medically. For example, no one has died during a marathon from dehydration, but every year people die form the opposite, hyponatremia. A footballer could make sure they are hyper-hydrated before sunrise and will be able to train, just some discomfort later in the day. Also forma training perspective things can be adjusted. I imagine for footballers the off season is spent doing the hardest workouts building the highest aerobic base, as they approach some thing important like world cup the exertion level is tapered and their is greater focus on skills to let the body recover. Also, taking a periodic break form hard CV exercise (which leads to the most dehydration) and focusing on something else like strength exercises is very good for long term training gains.

here's some examples of Christian self-denial

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asceticism#Christianity

The principal is EXTREMELY common in religious practice and, as covered in the attached, it is to teach you compassion. Giving you reason to be grateful and have an understanding of those less fortunate. It's only 14/16 hours or so, you'll be just fine!

Ramadan Mubarak

i'm probably wrong, but you're not supposed to work are you? so fasting is easier

B@
I think you are wrong..i have never heard of that before however i do know some people who take a month of due to ramadan but it is not a law or criteria one must obide to as a muslim.

is there a greating/phrase for this btw?

for once im ahead of the curve and can message my muslim friends on time lol

Considering these are longest days that one might fast in this country, ive not actually found it particularly difficult, and thats despite having young children who never ever sleep :p

It think the body actually sorts itself out fairly quick once you start fasting, its a good detox mentally and physically. And at the end of the day if you are unwell you dont have to fast, same for if you are travelling.

"Ramadan Mubarak", which is basically "Happy Ramadan"

don't say "Merry Ramadan" though 'cos they don't drink alcohol, innit!

and that is the amazing thing, we are capable of so much.

to my mind I think it shouldn't be possible to run a marathon (and actually why would anyone choose to put themself through this?) similarly we have become accustomed to eating whatever we want whenever we want (say we're starving when in fact we really are not) and so cannot fathom why people choose to fast.

But to fast is absolutely one way to understand oneself (for the month of Ramadan is much more than just abstaining from food and drink) and appreciate food which can be taken for granted.

Genuinely attempting such challenges gives yourself a priceless sense of achievement.

Religion is about power, not compassion. It's an entirely amoral thing. An ideology that can cause lots of people to willingly suffer for it for no reason other than obedience to it, an ideology that controls the most primal aspect of survival in its followers, that controls their very instincts...that's extreme power. That's why the most power-orientated religions specifically target food and sex - if you can control your followers in such primal things, you have extreme power over them and if you can get enough followers that you have so much power over you rule in a way that would be far harder without religion in your politics. A few tyrants have managed it with areligious politics, but only a few and not for long.

It's not limited to Islam, of course. Islam is currently the dominant power-crazed religion but it's far from the only one. Christianity isn't fundamentally different, nor is Judaism. Consider, for example, the story of Abraham and Isaac or look at the power of Christianity in high medieval Europe. The main difference is that those religions currently have less power.

You'll see some excuses (it's about detoxing, whatever), but they're obviously not true. If it was about detoxing (or whatever excuse is used) then people would be doing it whenever they chose at any time of the year and not making a big deal about it because it would be a personal thing. Instead, they do it when ordered to do it. It's a political thing, an obedience thing, a power thing. Not a personal thing.
