NEW Pay-by-mile car insurance

hi Ollie, quick question if I may...

Why are these collected then?

No problem at all. These pieces of data are collected for a few reasons. The first three are vital pieces of information we use to price the per-mile premiums of the policy (location, date, time and distance of journeys), while we use the last few (speed, acceleration and smoothness of braking) to improve our product, to help learn more about how accidents occur and make the roads safer.

Iamzod, in answer to your question - it plugs into your car's OBD-II socket, yes.

As part of a policy you get the use of our web dashboard and smartphone app, and the Miles Tracker helps power many of the tools these offer, including features like Find My Car (so you can find your car in massive airport car parks or track it down if it's stolen), Car Medic (so you can scan your car for codes if you have a warning light on the dash that you don't recognise) and we also have a crash detector so we're alerted if we think you might have had an accident - so we can get you help right away.

As we've only just launched, we do have a few restrictions in place from our insurance underwriter at the moment. This does restrict us from covering slightly more exotic vehicles and cars with certain modifications - as well as pieces of machinery that are just so beautiful that thieves can't keep their hands off them.

We hope to be able to offer cover for more drivers and cars as we grow, and we'll hope to become more competitive on price too.

Out of interest, would any of you higher mileage drivers be interested in an all-you-can-drive policy if you were able to use tools in the app?

I found the quote to be quite competitive actually on my E350 Mercedes Cabriolet, this could be good for occasional use cars.

£188.75 + 4.3ppm, which is in line with the best multicar quotes i currently use.

This would be a problem for someone like me as I actually use my OBD port for other stuff if that's where it connects?

Out of interest, what do you use the OBD-II socket for at the moment? We offer a range of tools in the app, but we're always looking to add more - so let us know what you'd want to use it for!

They won't quote on the focus ST, but I expect my mileage would make it more expensive than my current insurance anyway.

On the fiesta it ends up a little bit over our pre multi car discount price - but given this only covers a few thousand miles you aren't really paying much over the base rate.

Its 50 pounds cheaper on my 350z with 2000 miles more than i got on my inurance atm hehe.
But thats not a problem Road tax is where the money go thats why i went 2004 instead of 2006 model as it goes to the 550 quid/year for god damn tax :S

I went for the 9000 miles a year (on average) option when I bought mine. Can't get a quote either. Doubt £400 year would be beaten through.

You must have to do something silly like 1000 or 2000 miles a year for it to save you money.

Hi Mike, we've designed our policies to work for people that drive less than the UK average of 7,000 miles a year (that's 130-140 miles a week), but we have customers that drive over 15,000 miles a year and it's still saving them money compared with their previous traditional car insurance policy.

At the moment we're still tinkering with pricing to make sure we're competitive though, and your quote depends on a range of factors like the type of car you drive and your driving history that could push the price up.

but how well do they deal with mods? I know your zed is modified, bet they wouldn't accept the policy after that because you know "mods = child killer"

also older cars, pre obd2 are no go either.

from my pov it is nowhere near competitive enough to be worth having the black box in my car. I'd rather pay the extra 20-30 quid a year and have usual insurance that wont work against me in a case of a claim because I accelerated too hard lol

Mileages are measured using a telematics device plugged into a car’s On Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) port

I don't have an OBD-II port :-(

However the minimum yearly charge is still more than I pay, so not fussed :-)

Whats the proposal for cars that don't have an OBD-II port?

Good question. At the moment, we can only cover cars with an OBD-II port (all cars manufactured in the EU since 2002 have one), but we've considered looking into alternatives for classic cars - this will be a little way off yet though.
OOO I see we got sets say REP inolved nice. Next Year Ill look in to the situation myself. Since I take my 350zout of garage for a drive Once a week sometimes once in two weeks. Last few years I was doing 3500-5000 miles so Its an interesting option for weekend blaster.
Assume Telemetry does not change the the insurance cost??? would be no go for me as I take Zee for 3-4am B road fun rides. One of 2 reasons I actually own a car haha.

Other rhing. So if its lets say 200 pound standing charge, so You pay that up front right ?? Then every month You get a bill for How many miles Yu done on that month or how does it work ??
Like last weekend took Zee for drive to Wales and back for... Fish and chips at the beach 7 hours of driving for 3 hours stay haha. So that was 310 miles trip in 1 day,
How does it work in situations like that ??

Compared to my DC2 the 350z is Stock :D
I cant think of Any part that have not been upgraded changed in some way on DC2... Well Steering wheel (momo with no air bag) and Recaros ware stock. Even dashboard was wraped/resprayed. Modified electrical harnes ect. Extra chasis welds.

But ye. As I see it Mods like upgraded brakes should decrese Insurance cost. If You got bigger better brakes on car or better suspension car handles better = smaller chance you actually crash it. I can see how POWER mods get insurance UP.
