Boris and the burka

scared because it is something unknown, which is exactly what a phobia is.
I don't believe it's all down to irrational fear or hatred but simply culture clash, these sorts of conflicts arise from the interaction of people with different cultural values.

I tired this earlier, I was told to "google it" and "educate myself" also "why should I spends time researching this", never did see any prrof or links to parts of the Koran that said anything like this. Just passive aggressive posts and insults.

I can find it here in 2 minutes:

http://www.quran-islam.org/articles/part_3/the_burqa_(P1357).html

A quote from that page:
What does The Quran say about the burqa?

First of all it depends upon who you ask. There is disagreement in Islamic circles as to what extent Quran advocates the wearing of the burqa. However, The Quran does not specifically mention the burqa or tell women to wear such extremely confining clothes. Instead, it instructs men and women to dress and behave modestly in society (24:31), which the Ulama or “Scholars” do agree upon. Modern day Muslims base their authority regarding the burqa on the hadith or collected traditions of life in the days of prophet Muhammad. It is important to note here that these “collected traditions” have no place in Islam, (please see relevant articles on this site). Most followers of these traditions know little of their origins or authenticity.

So, have a read, and see what you think.

If still boils down to some Islamic scholars asserting that "dress modestly" means "cover completely". Regardless, these women are still complying with a directive (mis-)interpreted from the Quran, despite this fallacious notion of "personal choice".

The page seems to specifically state that the only body parts(s) specifically expected to be covered are the breasts/cleavage and hair. Everything else is a cultural tradition/interpretation. Not a religious decree.

The Quran itself doesn't even state that women can't be imams, believe it or not.

Not suprising at all. I believe that a lot of the "rules" in Judaism (for example) are also "interpreted" and not direct literal translations.

They are outdated and non-specific documents which have been bent and turned to meet modern requirements when needed.

Granted, but the Quran still instructs women to dress modestly, which is being (mis-)interpreted by some as full coverage.

The thirteen wives Muhammed had during his life (with considerable polygamous overlap) is perhaps a hint at women's place in Islam.. .

Along with the normal Abrahamic religious instructions and actions of killing the old, the men and the boys and taking the women of defeated groups as (sex) slaves.

And again for anyone that thinks it's a point to bring up examples of males from other religions or cultures who were polygamous /married children/ etc.....

Can you name one who is held up as a moral exemplar, in the West in the here and now?

Indeed, dress modestly and "has to wear a burka" are two very different things, one is very vague and one is very clear.

What is one person or Imam's take can be radically different to the next. look how being "dressed modestly" and indecency has changed in culture and law in the UK.

I can imagine there are only 200 women wearing the burka (although it does seem low).

However, there must be considerably more women wearing the niqab. Maybe that's why people are so incredulous over the small number.

*Edit* Bah — beaten like a ginger stepchild.

Are you perhaps confusing the Burka with the Niqab?

:D
