Should bronze money be scrapped?

If theres a war cash is hardly going to matter, such irrelevance.

The fact is that eventually they'll just stop printing the stuff, better get used to it and your Banker overlords.

Eh? Whst do you mean cash is hardly going to matter.

Not sure if you've noticed but we've been at war for almost the last 17 years.

Even during ww2 cash was very important for citizens

Yeah Tefal Internet banking took a real punishment from luftwaffe bombing.....

Do you think they had a choice of anything but paper and coins?

We are talking ww3 post nuke war not proxy bs in some far off s-hole.

What do you guys think?
No offense intended, but I think it's a dumb idea. Replacing the £5 note with a coin would require people to carry more coins an less notes, that's bad. Equally bad is the idea of getting rid of 1&2 pence and rounding everything to the nearest 5p (inflation up the ****).

NB: The decimal halfpenny was removed due to the unpopularity over it's small size, not it's usefulness (as it was a good counter to inflation, preventing prices being rounded).

exactly, money only has value because everyone agrees that it does. .
Exactly. Like I said in post 99, cash is only form of telling the bank to deduct or increase your balance to the value of x. Bit like a premade iou to the value of.

If the poop hits the fan and banks collapsed or a catostrophic event like one conspiracy theory here then those bits of paper/copper/metal will most likely be worth squat anyway.

Copper coins should be scrapped, hate those damn coins. Only use contactless when I can these days for everything, extremely rare I have cash on me.

Almost all people, sadly this is something the tiny "card only" minority can't seem to grasp.

"Card only minority"? Only this year debit card payments outdid cash!

Yeah no were not talking post nuke.

As that's just fantasy land vs.

We've seen European nations invaded in the last few years, no nukes.

And yes they did have a choice not to use notes and coins, in fact for much of what they used thier notes and coins for they were explicitly banned from using thier notes and coins for it ;)

Tbh about the only thing I use cash for is taxies and busses

And no need for more £50 notes either. Physical currencies are phasing out anyway, it's only the older generation who mostly use physical currency, so ~20 years from now and I'd imagine it will mostly have phased out.

That's a very presumptuous statement. Hard current needs to stay. Many small businesses operate on it and there will always be a need. If you think otherwise then you're being delusional. I always carry cash on me and use it all the time.

I will require cash until there is the equivalent of an Oyster card outside of London for buses. 1p and 2p coins do seem pointless though; vending machines, parking ticket machines etc. haven't taken them for years.

Why? It's very uncommon to come across places that don't accept card payments, and most big businesses don't even have a minimum limit either.

Small businesses only use it because their customers still use it. So no, there's nothing delusional about seeing a future without physical currency, you just need to get with the times.

Does your local bus company not have an app that can be used to purchase tickets with? I believe most of the big players in this industry have that functionality available.

.

No, Small businesses use it because if you only have a modest turnover the marginal cost of accepting cards is actually quite high.

Me, I have bypassed cards altogether. For me it is Cash, Cheque (I still get a lot of those) or "Faster Payments"

actually cash users have become the minority, and it is only going to shrink https://www.theguardian.com/busines...transactions-overtake-cash-for-the-first-time

cash got pretty useless in the Weimar Republic as well, needing a wheelbarrow full of it to buy a loaf of bread. Brexit will be fun.

most of them do, although unlike the Oyster card they can't be used between companies due to legislation in London.
Stagecoach in Yorkshire and Derbyshire certainly do.

So am guessing this would mean things like petrol would go up 5p per ltr each time (IE £1.35 to £1.40)
The same with gas and electric etc

If so then this idea could ending up costing us a small fortune
