What film did you watch last night?

Dune. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087182/

Certainly not for the first time. An absolute classic; surreal, bizarre, horrifying, and at times nauseating.

If you haven't seen it and like sci-fi, it's a must-see.

If you liked that, it's also worth trying to track down the two Sci-Fi channel mini-series that do the first three books (Dune and Children Of Dune). Obviously they don't have as much budget, but they are more faithful to the story, and bring another interpretation of the novels to the screen.

Searching (2018) - 10/10

A superb and engrossing missing person thriller with a great story, a good number of twists, red herrings, and emotional impact.

The strong cast of characters and commitment to its style of presentation make it feel fresh and relevant and shows off the various sides to our current digital age.

Really enjoyed it from start to finish.

I've already posted how much I liked "A Quiet Place" and someone else has touched on this already...I think anyone who is a parent with younger children especially will find this more harrowing.

There were moments I was almost wringing my hands with tension, my wife was close to tears in other parts. We have a 14 month old child so could really relate to a lot of the more intense moments.

A Quiet Place 5/10. Great monster design, some good tense moments and Emily Blunt was excellent, buuuuuut..............wtf:

  • One noise and you're dead? OK, i get that, however, they have rigged the house with lights, nicely decorated, house and radio room with electric AND a working farm - how the **** did they do all of that without making a single noise?
  • The monsters are attracted by sound, so why haven't the military/survivors lured the monsters and killed them in a variety of manners? Missiles? Gasoline? BFG?

I'm looking forward to see what Denis Villenuevdoes with it, last I read he was looking at two films at least.

The Snowman: 1/10
I give it 1 purely because it featured some lovely Norway scenes. Beyond that it was slow, predictable and why they do films with foreign characters in foreign locations and insist on it being in English is beyond me.

Spiderman Homecoming: 7/10
Light hearted, a film you don't have to think about. I enjoyed it teatime watching stylee.

Geostorm - 1/5

Up there with Inspector Gadget as the worst film I've ever seen. Most of the acting is appalling, the special effects go from poor to abysmal scene by scene and the story is utter trash.

Thanks, I'll check those out. I've also started watching a Dune documentary (seems there are a few interesting bits around on the net), so you may be interested in Jodorowsky's Dune https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1935156/

Yep, it's sitting on my "pile of things I should find the time to watch". The Dune movie that never was. I'm interested to see what Denis Villeneuve makes of it. I would love it if they get Roger Deakins to do the cinematography.

BlacKkKlansman (2018) - 7/10

A timely and relevant true story which although long and meandering, makes plenty of good points along the way.

The film shows both sides of the conflict and how many people can approach the same problem from different ways with varying levels of success.

It manages to contain both humourous and sickening scenes, but thanks to the great acting and cast of characters, stays entertaining throughout.

I felt the ending was a bit underwhelming, although the modern day real life footage was chilling to see.

I've forgotten all about the remake, great, that's something to sure look forward to.

I think I'll have to get stuck into the books, I used to love reading when I was younger but I seem to have done a lot less since the advent of the internet. :D

Upgrade - 6/10 - A good techno take on the "body shock" genre with a fairly obvious twist but some very good performances and a story which, while it has lots of "seen it all before" moments, was still interesting enough that I wanted to know more about Fisk and the others.

Dog soldiers 7/10

Somehow missed this when it came out. Doesn't take itself too seriously, just the right mix of horror, action and comedy. I don't normally do werewolf films, but this is a good watch.

It's a massively underrated classic! Fantastic film.

Ready Player One 8.5/10

Really enjoyable sweet film that had me giggling like a teenager throughout. The sheer number of games/pop culture related references are mind boggling and I'm pretty sure I missed a lot. Should be compulsory viewing for anyone who likes video games!

It has one of my all time favourite lines in it
