heads up @AeoNGriM the PSU just fits with rubber anti vibrations on :)

i would say x299- but sure they were having a little refresh q4 but personally want AMD to get as much marketshare and peoples cash as possible to bring it to Intel haha

recommend changing stock filters ! i used generic 360 filter but they have sold out

also... thermal grizzly NON Metal

Ordinarily I'd agree, but as I'm not hugely short of cash on this build, why the heck not? I'll mess around with benchmarking for giggles and throw some other intensive stuff at it to see what it's capable of. Plenty of overhead for a little bit of future proofing aswell :p

Updated basket :

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,358.05 (includes shipping: £15.30)

Anything I'm missing here? I already bought a bunch of SSD's so I got storage covered :)

With a build like this you should be using M.2's over ssd's and make use of all the pci lanes!

And just to clarify, Gaming you will get better performance at less cost with intel.. I wish that wasnt the case but it is and why i ruled out threadripper from my next build. with the money saved you could buy a 1080ti or 2000 series GPU too and get much better gaming perf

I get your draw to Threadripper though its a compelling platform!

Does the filter attach to the cooler or directly to the case? This is my first foray into water cooling/radiators!

Also, which thermal grizzly paste is the best option here? Fair bit of difference in price in the range, most expensive is almost £60!

@netdps That's interesting.......What would you recommend for an Intel build for purely gaming?

@AeoNGriM

pretty much what orbitalwalsh said if you can wait then

i7-9700k or i9-9900k on Z390 depending on cost / gaming benchmarks and extent of OC's, hopefully a lot more info in october when they are due for release (may only be paper release). (i think this would save you around £500-600 over the threadripper build just on Mobo/CPU alone you could also reduce memory to 16gb in this build if your only gaming and save another £200 that would give you potentially £800 to drop on a new GPU which will give you the biggest boost to gaming)

However I should point out at 4k gaming both from what ive seen perform around the same as the GPU's become the bottleneck

Argh! Decisions decisions! The 2950X is VERY comparable to the current crop of Intel chips with regards gaming performance, although Intel does have the edge by about 10-15%. I'm so tempted to go Threadripper but I think I'll wait until the 9700K makes an appearance and see how she benches before I buy.

I'll hold off on MB, CPU and RAM but I'm going to go ahead and order the rest of the build ie case, PSU and the cooler with some extra fans.

Many, many thanks to you guys for your help and advice. I'll be sure to update the thread next month and show off the new build when she's finished :D

You've got free shipping from ocuk, I'd wait until deals pop up (from time to time) to save a few quid as you're not in a hurry

Looks like your in the same place as me.

I have

Evolv X on preorder
Zotac Amp Extreme 1080ti
512gb 970 Pro (thinking of getting a second for more space and maybe raid 0)
Bunch of other Sammy SSD's

Still to order and waiting on 9000 series release

CPU + AIO
Mobo
Ram
PSU (looking at a 850w Seasonic just not clicked to buy yet)

Look forward to hearing on how you decide to go and how it compares!

So we're back again!

I picked up my case, PSU, extra fans and the AIO CPU coolor, and I have a stack of SSD's to lob into her. Now that the i9 is out I'm looking to complete the build and finish pimping out the new rig!

Just looking for a little advice on MB + RAM to go with the 9900k, was thinking of this combo :

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £886.08 (includes shipping: £11.10)

I do like Gigabyte tech, I have a Gigabyte 980 TI I'm hanging onto for a while so was drawn to the Aorus Z390, but just not 100% sure. I've no idea which RAM to go for, preferably 16GB or higher.

How could I complete this or improve on it? Money isn't really a factor, I'm more concerned with performance, if that makes any difference!

more value for money (hard to say that with intel currently), but covers what you need :)

vrm on this and cooling blow Viral boards out the window, runs cooler then MSI Meg and Asus Formula (non water) with AVX workloads at default speed have the thermal images but not allowed to show

as a Heads up, Ultra and Pro also perform quite well as slightly less cost , but lack the fancy looks- Aorus ram should hit 3700hz overclock

not running with 16 core thread ripper ? 12 core just released saving same cash

This is awesome! Yet again Orbitalwalsh delivers! Thanks chief!

I decided not to go TR, am just looking for the best possible gaming performance so sticking with Intel for this build :)

Was looking at the Meg aswell, would it be worth it with the DDR4-4600 OC??

not allowed to show thermal data on all the brands- but the Xtreme 16 phase knocks it out the park . Know your gaming and not running workstation loads or AVX instructions but the other boards either fail or are quite bad haha .
Master is about 10-20c cooler then the rest in class and with a 12 phase set up , is just a little behind the Meg and on par with the ACE but better design - just Bios isn't quite as slick as the rest but improving .

If the meg had a Plx chip in it, could understand the price but it doesn't :(

^^can run that was 5.1ghz all cores with AVX and wont break above 70c no active cooling on VRMs :D

Thanks again mate, I really appreciate your time and advice with the new build. Decided to pull the trigger on the bundle (lucky I did as they only had 1 left in stock!) so I'll be keeping an eye out for the DHL van in a couple of days :)

Now, if I can only find the time to put everything together I'll be laughing!

I'll be sure to post some pics of the new girl once she's up and running, many thanks again to everyone who contributed advice in the thread and to OCUK <3

damn, looks like selling out of boards so that effects bundle .

seems currently saying 1 left on screen then selecting it theres 2... so might be backlog to process ... hopefully you get order complete and shipped notice today :D
