What film did you watch last night?

Hold The Dark - The new Jeremy Saulnier release. Compelling and atmospheric murder mystery set in the far North. Best film i've seen this year and a must watch! Despite some negative reviews i think it's as good as his previous films, Blue Ruin and Green Room, both of which were excellent in their own right. 10/10

Leave No Trace and Molly are both above average too.

A Star Is Born (2018) - 8/10
Unlimited Screening

A modern take on a classic story which is still magnificent to experience today.

Cooper and Gaga get to show off all of their singing, acting and directing talents to great effect, with great songs, strong acting and real screen presence.

The story has plenty of romance, drama and excitement as well as being funny and emotional at times, but because of the snappy editing and lots of musical performances, it does feel like a “behind the scenes on tour” film at times.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

On paper this is everything I hate in a movie but having taken the time to watch the trailer and a few reviews, i'm quite looking forward to watching it.

Night School (2018) - 2/10

Overall, it was bad and could have done with being half an hour shorter.

The story is ok but I didn’t really get the point the film was trying to make, which may have been because it wasn’t trying to make one.

Some of the humour works, but most of it falls flat, ranging from silly to puerile.

The wide range of characters offer variety, but they were caricatures rather than people.

Ready Player One

Derivative, actiony, overly-long movie with some nice effects here and there.

Probably 6/10 if you've not read the book, 1/10 if you have.

Why do movie makers do this? Why pay for a license if you're going to ignore it so thoroughly? I get the demands of film and prose are different, but this? This is just awful. Unrelentingly bad.

Like, if you've seen this movie and not read the book, go read it and then you too can hate this movie

It's like someone took slow roast lamb and replaced the lamb with poop.

Hold the Dark on Netflix - 6.5/10

Beautiful cinematography and good performances all round but it all added up to not much for me. Story just wasn't there and considering the film's length the ending left a lot to be desired.

One of the best movies I will never watch again :D, I read somewhere that throughout the film they put some wierd high pitched audio to make you even more uncomfortable.
Yes, Noé has all sorts of horrible sounds in the background to induce vertigo and a general sense of unpleasantness :p
During the opening club scene, there's this low, trombone-like drone to induce queasiness. Like the whole fire extinguisher thing isn't bad enough :/

Teen Titans Go! the movies.

Went with the kids on a "mini morning" as its peanuts to get in and it was absolutely brilliant. Some good marvel and deadpool jokes with good cameos. So so good, i would recommend anyone to watch it, some really clever jokes for old folk like us.

Hold the Dark, a new film on Netflix with Alexander Skarsgard and Jeffrey Wright - 4/10.

Apparently the director is renowned for his violent films, personally I found the level of it a bit gross, it seemed to really revel in it. Also, the ending is really disappointing, there's no proper resolution to the story. It was also one of those films where everyone speaks in riddles, where characters converse in a way that nobody would in real life. I thought the whole thing was really pretentious and the only saving grace was some nice cinematography. If you want a film set in a bleak, snowbound environment, go watch Wind River instead, it's infinitely better than Hold the Dark.

Dunkirk 8/10

Had been putting off watching this as I had heard some negative comments, but it really is a fantastic film. Brilliant cinematography, good acting and really gets you in the feels.

Best film I have seen for a while.

The Hunt,
A Scandiweegie film about how a lie can tear someones life apart, it gets 8.3 on ImDb and after watching it I know why.
Well worth watching.

The Invitation - 5/10

Watched it because Jim Sterling recommended it in Podquisition. It was ok, not terrible but not great either....on the whole I felt a little disinterested, and it's one of those films that you need to go into blind else you'll have the (easily guessed) resolution ruined. Essentially a couple get invited to the man's ex-wife's dinner party and stuff happens.

I've seen this one, thought it was ok. I'd give it a 6/10.

Definitely worth a watch for me.
