A few years back, there were lots of news stories about house fires, and fires in blocks of flats, possibly from the lint etc in tumble dryers igniting.
Fire chiefs laboured the point that they should NOT be used when the house was empty, i.e. don’t put them on, and go to work, or shopping etc., or put them on, then go to bed.
We ALWAYS clean out the lint filter prior to using the dryer, without fail, but still switch it off if we were to go out, is switching off, or not putting it on absolutely necessary if the filter is always cleaned out?
My wife is out, and asked me to do the washing while she’s at her dad’s, it’s on now, both washer and spin dryer, and I thought that I’d stroll down the street to put the lottery on, but I’ll turn both washer and dryer off, am I being over cautious, or doing the right thing?

I would leave a washing machine going but not a tumble dryer personally. Also just do the lottery online?

We had a tumble dryer catch fire in 2010. The missus and then 3 year old son were in the house while I was working nights. Luckily the fire dept are literally 2 minutes away and it was contained to the laundry room but smoke damage was throughout the house.

My advice is never leave a tumble dryer unattended. Tinder dry lint and heat is never a good combination.

Thanks, it's appreciated, sounds about right, actually I went downstairs and the dryer had just finished, so I earned my brownie points by folding it all, and pairing up my socks, putting her lingerie in her drawer, and noting that the washing machine had 10 minutes to go, I sauntered off, leaving it running, and got back with one minute left, that stuff is in the dryer now.
My wife does her office Lottery syndicate online, and constantly harangues me to do the same, but I tell her that the extra 10 minute walk exercise does me good. as if my one mile daily circuit of the park isn't enough.

Tell the wife to get the lottery on the way home, then tell her there's a pile of washing to be done when she walks in....while cooking you some dinner :D

Do the dryers cost much to run? My friend runs his for 120 mins per week. He was asking me, i said not sure. I seen some calculators online but not sure how accurate they are?

I had our hotpoint drier modded but the techie said its down to the excess lint and fluff which builds up . Has no where to go but fall out of the filter and down into the heating element. Apparently says in the manual, to always clear the filter after every use. With the filter clear, you're golden IMO

Ive shared accommodation with another 7 people for the last 12 years, at least 4 loads per day get put on in the dryer and not once has it caught fire.

You might say that's fine, but seemingly NOBODY knows how to empty the lint catcher, so when they wonder why their clothes aren't dry and just put it on again it gets probably 5-6 runs per day.

Not one fire so far though

I'd happily leave my washing machine on all day. Tumble driers on the other hand, I would only trust while I'm in the house with a smoke detector in the same room as it.

What make and model is it?

just had an issue with our hotpoint dryer,

a wire out Mrs 233s bra had ended up behind the drum and caused an electrical short in the dryer eek.

also amazing where that lint gets and accumulates.
