Apple Event - 30th October - 2pm - "There's more in the making"

Wow that i7-8700B is a BEAST!
https://ark.intel.com/products/134905/Intel-Core-i7-8700B-Processor-12M-Cache-up-to-4-60-GHz-

The prices though, are utterly insane. Mac mini with above i7, 16GB and 512GB is £1600, vs latest Gen8 NUC NUC8I5BEH (which has an extremely respectable i5-8259U), 16GB and 512GB NVMe totals £626. So essentially almost triple the price for the Apple equivalent. I really would like to get a mini, but I just can't afford those prices! And I'd like to know who can?! It's almost like Apple is saying "eff you" to all those who've been protesting over the past few years that they've abandoned the Mac platform, and now they're saying "we dare you to buy a new Mac, didn't you say you wanted one?".
Yeah the Mini price is a shame, I have a 2012 Mini which I got from the bay last year for around £350; i5, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Superb machine, also got Mojave update on it too. Suits me for my needs.

Has there been any word as to whether these iPads with USB C ports will have read/write access to USB media?

So the reviews are out and they say that technically if app is designed to read from external device it will (not sure if this includes storage drives). System itself won't see it but apps can have access to it if you want to use for example microphone etc.

OS can charge directly any device and it can have access to camera systems, although you can only copy files to your ios camera roll, not to other apps. Not sure if app creators can implement function to upload directly into their apps (without using shortcuts).

After a bit of thinking, as much as I'd like the 11" Pro, for what I use an iPad for it just wouldn't be worth it.

So I'm going to save myself a ton of cash and just get the regular sized model with an Apple Pencil, Smart Cover and save about £300.

I'll still be insanely jealous of you all with your Pro's haha, but the head is ruling over the heart on this one.

I think I'll pick up an 11". But no doubt I'm going to have to wait to see how ridiculous the stock situation is first as I doubt I'll be able to just walk in and pick one up tomorrow.

My 11" Pro has shipped (yes, the Pro I wasn't going to buy...). Will be quite an upgrade to my Air 2 so really hyped.

I know there's a lot of complaining about the price of the new Mac mini but just listing to the MGG podcast, they came up with a very interesting scenario which I might actually do myself to replace my ageing 'family' 2011 iMac.

Buy the base Mac mini but upgrade the CPU to the i7 - That gives you a Mac mini with a 3.2GHz 6 core CPU with hyperthreading and turbo boost up to 4.6GHz for £1069. That's quite a powerful little beast. Buy and install third party RAM and install the OS on an external SSD connected via USB3/Thunderbolt/USB-C. Most people won't be taking their Mac mini around with them so a small external box with an SSD isn't a problem to put somewhere.

An interesting one that.

I think for me - in disbelief at the new prices - id want more for the money - so as expensive as it will be, ill wait on the 6-8 core imacs, but then, I suppose they really won't be THAT much faster than the current MBP (especially when vega is in them come end of Nov), so it all comes down to how much cheaper the imac version will be.

I want a Mac mini as a plex media server. At the moment I've got Plex running on my 40TB Synology DS918+ NAS but it struggles transcoding more than 1x 1080p bluray rip plus it does my CCTV system, cloud backup and download box. I could do with offloading the heavy lifting, so to speak.

£300 less and I'd have one. As it stands, I'm liking the look of a NUC.

Can you not buy a refurbished one from the Apple site? Think they’re going for £400.

Anyone know if the current Apple Pencil (round gen 1) will work with the new iPad Pro.

I’m guessing yes but as a new to Apple user it’s worth an ask.

They pair via lightning too don't they, so since the new ones have no lightning port there's no way to pair it.

Not sure if a lightning to USB C cable and the lightning coupler bundled with the pencil would work, but I've read it isn't compatible and Apple don't list it as compatible on their site (though that may be for simplicity but I doubt it).

That’s a very well presented point Phemo, I didn’t think about the lightening port pairing.

*edit - seems this article also agrees with your assessment Phemo. Might as well stump up for the new pencil and cover then, Bernard Mathews Turkey for Christmas this year then, sorry kids.

The new Mac mini only got announced last week. It'll be months before they appear on the refurb store.

The old 1.4GHz dual core is woefully underpowered for Plex.
