Witcher 3 - Late to the party question...

You're right, I definitely grossely under estimated the time I spent on the main game and DLCs
 
Playing this right now myself and enjoying it more than I did the first time around I played it on release. About 62 hours in, level 30 now and story is probably around 80% done at this point. There are still many side quests to do, but not sure if I will do them all before moving on to Hearts of Stone dlc. Will be the first time with the dlc’s so don’t want to end up being burned out by the game before getting there.
 
I could not get into it on xbox, I think it's very much like the Elder Scrolls games in that it's far more playable on a PC with a mouse and keyboard, the third person view put me off a bit too. I'll hopefully be giving it another go now I have my new pc setup.
 
Not my genre of game but was obsessed from the day I started ;) get some of the hi-res mods on it and prepare to lose a lot of time :)

If taking your time with it = 50+ hours, I don't know what I must have been doing as i'm like 200 hours in and still not even completed the main game lol. Then again I did get into Gwent quite heavily as well, so that added a lot of time one.

To the OP, I'm sure you will love it. It is a little overwhelming at first, but doesn't take too long before you learn the ropes and get to know what all the hundreds of loot items are for etc.

I'm in a similar boat.

I've restarted at least 7 times now and just can't get into it enough to want to progress through the main story beyond doing a portion of the Skellige stuff... nothing in the plot draws me to care about Ciri so I end up dragging my feet with any progress.
I enjoyed the Hearts of Stone DLC but struggle so much with liking the core story.
 
I don't even like the whole fantasy genre normally but the Witcher 3 is stellar. Absolutely must-play gaming and one of the best games ever, comfortably.
 
Personally I used an Xbox 1 X pad, worked flawlessly with the game IMO and much preferred it over Keyboard and Mouse. would give that a try if you have one laying around IMO.

I'm solely a mouse and keyboard player as I hate controllers and also struggled with the controls, it's my biggest issue with the game and what makes the combat so bad in my opinion. I did try a controller but as with every 1st and 3rd person game it felt like having my hands bound together vs a mouse and keyboard.
I just didn't feel as connected to the action as I should, its certainly not a very accurate system and the fact you can just roll around and basically be invincible should not be a thing, still I did get used it somewhat and managed nearly 40 hours which I enjoyed for the most part but at which point I'd had enough of the endless dialogue cut scenes, so I'd say try and stick with it for 10-15 hours and if you still feel the same just give up.

I could use my Xbox One pad but I really struggle with using a pad with these games.

I have just tried to play with an hour and killed the first monster with my witcher friend. Combat is terrible and so difficult to be accurate and actually hit something. Killing the dogs before to help the hunter I just held shift and clicked constantly to hit things. Seems hard to hit, but easy at the same time. It feels the same as DA:I at this point where I am sure the story will be great but just cannot get passed the poor controls.

Will try again in a few days.
 
Would defo give it a whirl if you do have an Xbox one pad as you say. Not a fan of using it with every game, but found it worked very well here. Just need to get used to either method I suppose.
 
I think also I have heard so much about how great this game is I am waiting for it to wow me. It is very pretty and I have the PC to show it off well, but it hasn't wow'd me yet.
 
I use the mouse and keyboard and find the combat pretty good, natural and satisfying. You can dodge a lot, but can't take many hits / much punishment, so any mistakes are paid for.

Keep at it for longer.
 
I personally liked the combat. Although I hated the horse riding. Well worth buying; deep characters, great story, good graphics, music etc. Amazing game.
 
Don't forget to enable the better character movement in the menus. They patched it to make it 'less' clunky.
 
I feel sad that I don't have time to play this all over again. 190 hours on my save!

I really need to do it at some point because I want to see how different choices pan out.

Anyone moaning about combat needs to git gud. :p Actually it's much easier with an mmo mouse with hat switch, I map signs and dodge to it.
